Just came back from 2 nights in Harlech and this B and B has the best location. It sits above Harlech Castle and the castle is on a cliff! We stayed in Room 1 with a gorgeous view of the castle (to our right) and the Bay (and Beach) directly ahead with no obstructions - gorgeous! The hosts were extremely friendly and really made you feel at home. Our room had a very comfortable bed and 2 chairs in the bay window to sit and enjoy the view. The house was built in 1907 and is very cosy. There are tea making facilities in your room along with cookies and chocolates and bottled water. The bathroom was a little small but cute and the towel warmer was lovely. Breakfast is very good. You have alot of choice - cereals(hot or cold) , yogurt with fresh fruit to add, muesili, eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, toast (white or brown), fruit bread, welsh cakes and a variety of preserves. You will be full after that! So if you want to burn off those extra calories the path to the beach starts right across the street - it's a good ways down so take your time and then you must cross the dunes to a 7 mile beach (you could walk forever) but save some energy for the walk back up! (it is a climb!) I should also mention that Maelgwyn House is set back from the road with a cute garden and sitting area to enjoy (there is also off-road parking ) Harlech itself is a cute little town built around the Castle (it is one of Edward I ring of castles but is not pushed by the tour companies)
It is however one of the most interesting because of it's location and fortifications - well worth a view. There are a few shops and tea rooms - go to Cemlyn Tea shop - they are so nice and serve good lunches as well as tea (they do close at 5 pm so make sure you're there by 4pm) Try the Bara Brith - a fruity cake and you get 2 slices! There are several choices for dinner but check to see if their open ahead of time. If you feel like a fancier dinner go to the Plas Restaurant - excellent food, lots of choice, beautiful view, and food is cooked to order. Harlech is a village worth a visit and do stay at Maelgwyn House.
