“Maes y Neduadd”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

We bought a KGB two night bed and breakfast for this hotel about 10 months ago, however all the weekends throughout the summer and autum were booked up, for that reason we elected o go on Friday and Sturday the 4th and 5th of January 2013.
The hotel is in a lovely location in the hills above the small village of Talsarnau and the building is very elegant and nicely furnished if slightly dated.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was all home made and very good.
My only issue was the fact that we had to pay extra for a cooked breakfast and this was not made very clear until we saw it on the bill. I believed bed and breakfast weekend should include a cooked breakfast.
On the whole this is a quaint country house and an ideal base for walking he Ardudwy mountains or exploring the coast around Harlech.

“Lovely but Needs Tweaking”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

The road leading up to the hotel was a bit tricky and extremely narrow, but it was expected. Sheep surround the estate. I was traveling with my fiance who is from northern England and I am from the southern United States. The exterior of the house is oozing with history and it was absolutely gorgeous even in early winter. The reception/check-in area was a bit odd considering the exterior, but it didn't really matter. There is a nice glass ceiling in the reception area filled with chairs and brochures to look at for areas surrounding the hotel. The receptionist led us to our room through the winding hallways and stairway. You can tell the age of the hotel because of the uneven walkways and floors. We stayed in Cromwell which was very nice. It had a large, cozy bed and overlooked the entrance and field of grazing sheep. Our room conveniently had two radiators. They had gin in the room which we were unsure of whether it was complimentary or not. The bathroom was a bit odd to us. It did not offer much lighting and had the toilet raised on a step with a light over it like it was a throne of some sorts. The bath water was an absolute waste! The temperature was very cold and resulted in a total bath time of five minutes. I had put some water in a cup to take my medication with, but I stopped there. I do not trust water that is not clear and fizzles with carbonation. We went down for dinner around 7:30pm and were first served canapes in the bar area. The chairs were quite comfy and the room was cozy. There were a lot of dark woods and colors accented by the crackling wood fireplace. The hearth of the fireplace was extremely old looking which is something I really enjoy. They really liked the idea of serving fish which I detest. Our first course was okay, the garlic bread was divine, and everything else was all right. They made it a bit too "fancy" for my taste. I prefer the basics which are usually the best. We were served our tea by the fireplace which was quite lovely. Dinner and breakfast are served in another part of the hotel aka the dining room. The hotel was quiet all through the night. We were served a nice continental breakfast/Welsh breakfast. The waiter and staff were very accommodating and friendly.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

Spent 2 nights at this lovely historic hotel. Included a lovely cooked breakfast and 3-course evening meals - they were excellent. Pleasantly surprised by the room (Artro) which was quirky and considering the room was part of the original 14th century house I think they really tried hard to make it as comfortable as possible. All the staff were friendly, and we enjoyed a relaxing and restful couple of days.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012 via mobile

We stayed in the hotel after buying a Travelzoo voucher which included full cooked breakfast and 3-course evening meal. The staff and the hotel itself were welcoming and I was pleasantly surprised by the room (Artro) after reading some of the other reviews. It's true that it was a bit shabby in some ways - the teatray could be greatly improved, the blanket was scruffy and the tv and lamp wires need tidying - but overall it was very comfortable and warm and had a good view. The bath was a spa bath and the toiletries were fine.

We were offered pre-dinner hors d'oeuvres in the bar and were given extra vegetarian dinner options by the chef which were not on the menu. The cooked breakfast was delicious but the options for people just having a continental breakfast were rather limited.

“Extremely disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

We booked a night's stay plus gournet dinner at Maes y Neuadd via TravelZoo and stayed at the beginning of December 2012. We often do this type of stay and have had some excellent experiences. However, this was not one of them. Maes y Neuadd is well past its prime as is evidenced by the appalling state of the private drive. The hotel itself looks very neglected from the outside and not at all welcoming (although I admit it was a cold, damp afternoon when we arrived). Unfortunately things didn't get any better when we got inside. To sum up, the hotel was cold, dirty and there was a most peculiar "stale food" smell in the public areas. I am sure in its hey day, it was a fantastic place, but it needs a lot of TLC now. Even the food was disappointing and it certainly wasn't a gourmet meal in my opinion and the breakfast was probably the worst I have ever had. Sorry, but it was truly an awful experience and it we had paid half of what we did, it would still have been too expensive. Would I stay there again or recommend it to friends, definitely not!

Room Tip: Don't bother!
