“Quirky and wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2014

I just love it here. I live in Chester but am from the N Wales coast so remember the ugly house as a child. So very pleased it is now open as a tearoom. Food is excellent - try the Bara Brith mmm. They use loose leaf tea and it really is like going back in time. It is a little expensive but the portions are large and worth it for the experience.

“Absolutely charming and value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

We called in for lunch and were lucky to grab an outside table in their pretty garden. We both ordered welsh rarebit. There was a short wait but food is definitely freshly prepared and served - it was no hardship waiting in their sunny garden with birds flying past and a friendly robin pecking around your feet. Our food was superb and yes perhaphs a little more expensive than other cafes locally but most definitely worth the extra penny or too. They have a sister cafe in Llanwrst perhaps the staff there could learn a thing or two from the staff at Ty Hyll as they were much more friendly and welcoming. Definitely somewhere to return to again and again when in Snowdonia.

“Fantastic Afternoon Tea in a not so Ugly House”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2014

I've always wanted to visit the Ugly house as we learnt its history in school, We had been in Llanberis today and wanted a nice cup of tea and a relax for 15 minutes. In the end we ordered the Afternoon Tea and a pot of tea :)

Fresh tea Leaf Tea, Scone, Bara Brith, lovely fresh bread with honey, butter, jam & Cream.
Good Service, good location, clean and tidy, tasty tasty food.

The other food they were serving also looked really nice and tasty. Will definitely return when passing on one of our drives out

“The shut house”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014

We decided to take an hour and a half drive from Chester to try this historic little tea rooms after reading on the web site that in the winter months it was open at weekends only. Upon arrival the windows were shuttered and the tearooms shut. What a wasted journey. Be advised, telephone before and don't rely upon the website as we did.

“By name but not by nature!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

It was a challenge not to stop each tome we drove by, but the two separate occasions we did so; breakfast and afternoon tea & cakes, provided delicious eating experiences! A chance stoppage because the building was so cute and unusual drew us to afternoon tea and cakes and we were so impressed we arranged to return for breakfast on another day. The scrambled egg and salmon was beyond delicious!!! The staff were friendly and the service prompt. Not only is this tiny building steeped in history, it has an ecologically friendly garden to explore. Well worth a visit!
