“Special stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

Visited after recommendation from a friend. Booked Martha Jane which is a lovely room with sitting area, private terrace and massive luxury bathroom. Only minor negative was lighting poor for makeup. Need an illuminated mirror in the bathroom.Very attentive service. Breakfast was fresh and plenty of it if you wanted. Will definitely return.

Having to been to the Harbourmaster for a few years I was surprised to see the revamped bar area and gastro pub feel of the eating area rather than a separate bar and restaurant. It's good for Aberaeron to have such a lively, well located place to eat, drink and stay.

Room Tip: They have an annexe which has a honeymoon suite overlooking the Harbour.

Normally would give The Harbourmaster a 5 star rating however for the first time ever we noticed a few things have slipped on our recent stay. Certain staff demonstrated a negative attitude especially one guy who worked in the bar and restaurant. This is not normal at Harbourmaster. There were mistakes and errors at dinner and we noticed two other couples either side of us complaining about the night before. There was a lack of management and direction. The room was not tidied in the way we are used to. Our gowns were not hung back up, cushions not rearranged, basically a lack of attention to detail. The food was still good. On the final day it was clear when Dai, one of the managers arrived the whole thing seemed more pulled together and there was a visible difference in the staff and standards.

If you enjoy fresh seafood, the Harbourmaster is a treasure. There is always a good choice of fresh locally caught fish on the boards as well as an extensive menu of local produce. The food, whether you eat in the bar or the restaurant, is beautifully presented. Not to be missed

I had a single room at the Harbourmaster which I loved. It was small, but made great use of the space. The ensuite bathroom was big enough to use and the part of the room made narrower because of it had the desk and so on. I had a really nice view of the harbour, and I loved the natural stone wall. It was really cosy and I could control the heating myself (awesome for a Scottish person who needs the room fairly cool at night) and the internet was free, if a little slow.
The whole hotel is really nicely decorated, someone with a good eye must spend ages looking for seaside themed art in the exact shades of blue that the hotel uses.
The staff were helpful and friendly, even when the place was full to bursting (I think the locals use the bar for their evening outings) and the restaurant was fab. I had the scallop starter two nights in a row, and it was delicious both times and the cote de beuf and rack of lamb were brilliant.
I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the hotel, which is rare. I expected the waterfront to be noisy in the mornings with all the boats heading out, but the windows were mostly soundproof, so that was a nice touch. I also liked the great variety of teas in the bedroom and that a towelling robe and slippers were left in the room for my convenience.

Room Tip: All of the rooms have photos on the site, my parents had the Madona suite which was really lovely wi...

I have eaten in both the restaurant and the bar on a regular basis and family members have stayed overnight. Rooms are tastefully decorated and the harbour-side location is excellent. There is terrific buzz about the place, and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Service is efficient and the food is good - but gastropub not fine dining even in the dining room. The main bar, which is often rammed, can be very noisy - they seem to have got the look right but the acoustic design wrong. Prices are high - well above what you might expect on the coast of West Wales but people seemed prepared to pay £6.0 for a glass of wine and a main course in the bar averages around £13.0. It is a very popular place - the place to eat and drink for quite a while now. So if you have deep purse give it a go.

Very clean and well run hotel with good restaurant serving excellent food. Room was spacious, comfortable and well equipped. Only gripe would be after an excellent evening meal the breakfast was very disappointing - poaches eggs were cooked solid as was scrambled eggs, bacon under cooked and sausage not very good quality.
