With so many great BBQ joints in Memphis, my wife and I followed the advice of some friendly locals and hit the original Central BBQ, then their downtown location days later just before flying back home to California.
The long line out the door at the original store bode well for us; if the locals love it, we probably will too. Did not disappoint. We both had pulled pork sandwiches, with my wife tucking into the greens and beans, while I had the mac n’ cheese and beans. Great all around. The slaw works really well with the pulled pork and a slathering of Central’s sauce (went with the mild; good stuff with just enough vinegar to make it snappy). Since it was a chilly day, the small indoor dining area was packed at lunch time. However, the super-friendly staff was on top of things and got tables turned and customers seated as quickly as possible.
Central’s downtown location offered up what were some of the best baby back ribs I’ve had anywhere, and certainly rank in the top 3. Got ‘em dry, which, for this Central-Texas-is-BBQ-Nirvana-no-sauce-needed snob, really is the only way to go. The ribs were well-cooked without being overpowered by smoke, and were devoured within mere minutes. So good were they that my sides of beans and slaw stood in silent horror as this fat, bald guy devoured the rack of smoky goodness like an African hyena. My wife meanwhile had the BBQ pulled pork nachos, which earned their reputation for delicious indulgence. Warning: the serving is huge, enough to make Claim Jumper’s famed portions look like wee tapas. Not sure how any one person, or group of people numbering under 30, could eat all that rich BBQ porky-saucy-chippy yumminess in one sitting. Yes, you just read that. Central BBQ rocks. Will definitely return when back in Memphis.
