“Jewell in the middle of Memphis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2010

I've lived in Memphis for many years, but had never heard about Elmwood Cemetery but was looking for something different to do with friends that were in town. Thanks to Trip Advisor, I found out about this Cemetery.

Upon entering the cemetery, you can "rent" an audio CD from the cottage for a cost of $10. The CD provide a 1 hour narration as you drive though the historic cemetery. It is very well done and focused on the history of ~60 famous people who are burried there. The roads are clearly marked with markers that tell you where to go and where to stop your car as you hear the narration. There are 4-5 locations where they recommend that you pause the CD and get out of the car and look at a particular stone, but we chose not to do this and still had a great time.

The cemetery has tombstones and monuments that are very old as well as some that are as new as 20 years ago. The rolling hillside also is covered with beautiful trees that still had some of its fall colors on it.

The cemetery isn't worth going to Memphis just to see it, but if you are in the area and looking for something different to do for ~1.5 hours, I would recommend this tour.

“Interesting audio tour and Beautiful Cemetery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2010

This cemetery is beautiful - lots of huge, old trees, as well as flowering trees that hang across the winding roads (when we were there in Aug), and old grave stones and statues.

We especially appreciated the professionally done audio tour (you buy the CD for $10 and listen in your car) that pointed out the more unique monuments, as well as providing stories about the interesting and famous people that are buried there. There is also a nicely done brochure with a map of the cemetery and additional info.

The neighborhood around the cemetery has seen better days, but don't let that dissuade you from going. We felt very at ease there.

“Absolutely Beautiful! Worth a stop, or maybe even two or three!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2010

This was an amazing cemetery. There were so many beautiful things to see, we spent a couple of hours there and, were it not for the heat, could have stayed much longer. I have NEVER been in a more beautiful cemetery. The trees, flowers, statuaries...everything was so beautiful and interesting. I took my family, and even the six year old was in awe of the place. A MUST SEE!!!

“Must See”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2010

This is a must see on your trip. I am not sure WHY Memphis tourism is not making a bigger deal out of the place. It is very old and the grounds are very well maintained. You can stop in the beautiful welcoming cottage and purchase a $10 cd and map. The CD is a must have...you learn all types of interesting Tid-Bits from the different residents (is that right to even say? lol) of the cemetery. I can not express how wonderful this place is...the history that is involved is amazing.
Plus, if you are up on your movie knowledge, you will notice a few spots from different movies.
I have read that many people were confused on how to get into the cemetery, but we had no problem at all. I will say that GPS took us through the WORST neighborhood in Memphis...I would not travel there in the evening if you are not familiar with the area.
All and All, this is a place to go FOR SURE!!!

“Absolutely not to be missed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2010

This is, IMHO, the best attraction in Memphis. I am shocked it is not better promoted. It is also hard to find, even with GPS, but keep driving and you will be rewarded. The grounds are gorgeous and the welcome center is amazing. They have clean restrooms and even picnic tables, I think. For $10 the staff will loan you a CD audio tour for your car. It is very professionally done, even better than some of the top-tier audio tours like Gettysburg Battlefield. You can pause it to get out and walk around, and you can take as long as you like. The audio stopping-points are well marked, and some of the stories are hilarious. Many important people are buried here, and it is an awe-inspiring look at not just Memphis history, but our nation's history. The neighborhood is not one you'd want to stroll in after dark, but really, the city tourism people need to be more focused on this great tourism venue, and get some proper signposts put up.
