i found out that on mondays in memphis all JAPANESE HIBACHI restaraunts are closed!!!! except for A-tan Chinese Restaurant. and i am so happy i found A-tan!!!!!!!!! it was the only one i could find open but i am sure no other japanese hibachi style place can come close to the excellent performance, kind service, delicious food, and all around good time we enjoyed there this past labor day! i have seen A-tan Chinese Restaurant for years (back behind Perkins Restaurant at poplar and highland. in the little strip of shops next to the El Chico Restaurant building. i never ate at their chinese restaurant because i already have my very favorite places for chinese food. but by accident while looking through the yellow pages, i discovered they had opened a japanese hibachi style restaurant adjacent to the chinese side! i have never heard through anyone, family or friends about this place! i don't think any one in memphis hardly knows its there. i think it may have been here for just a couple of years, not sure about how long. but now that i know it exists i can't wait to go back again soon! the chef did all the usual tricks with the knives, spatulas, egg toss, onion volcano, etc. he seemed to be happily engaged in his performance and not the least bit jaded. he put on an excellent and quite lengthy show! the food was prepared with a flourish and couldn't have tasted any better. we had a large table full of folks as it was my 50th birthday! so we had cold saki and hot! and around the table everyone ordered the teppanyaki lunch (the grilled dishes). some had steak, some shrimp. i had shrimp and chicken (and i also had a california roll sushi a la carte), which all came with choice of soup or salad and of course the grilled vegtables and rice. i had to bring home some because the portions were generous. the waiter was super attentive. and everyone involved with our table was smiling and friendly. at the end of the meal they brought me a humongous double scoop of some kind of mango sherbet with birthday candles stuck in it. how very thoughtful (it was complimentary). and no one in my party had even asked them to do that. not only was it a nice gesture...but boy oh boy was it delicious. i will definetly drive over there in the next few days just to get some of that mango sherbet to bring home. the place looked newly designed and was clean as a whistle. with tasteful decor. the only negative, which was miniscule, was a little confusion with the wrong people being put together on the tickets. their were ten of us and of course that could've been a little hard on the waiter. but this hardly even deserved mentioning here. i am telling everyone i know about this "great secret japanese hibachi restaurant". you will be sooooo happy if you go and check it out. whether you are entertaining out of town company or just a way to break the ice on a first date, or maybe celebrating a milestone of a birthday like me!, i'm sure A-tan Chinese Restaurant *(on the japanese side) will exceed all your expectations, in every way. i don't know if reservations are required, but we definetly made them 3 days out since we were a large group. and they have many choices you can order if you don't want the grilled dishes. oh and also there is a sushi and saki happy hour at 11 til 1 and then again in the evening too.
