Mac Edwards has a found a home on Highland. The Elegant Farmer is fast becoming one of my favorite restaurants in Memphis. His commitment to local products consistently produces delicious food. Small and intimate, the restaurant has the feel of a country bistro. If the weather is nice, an inviting patio beckons.
It's the food that stars, however. Every meal I've had has been delicious: catfish, shrimp and grits, trout, pot roast. Though not extensive, the menu offers a variety of choices and changes according to the produce available. My latest meal, shrimp and grits, provides an excellent example of the Elegant Farmer's approach. First of all, the portion is huge, sharable huge. It comes with braised greens, which some find too sweet but which I find delicious. The flavors meld perfectly, not like a symphony orchestra but like a tight jazz band -- sassy, spicy, sweet. A party in my mouth. That meal was typical of every meal I've had.
The Elegant Farmer is also one of the most reasonably priced restaurants you'll find. We usually get a half carafe of La Vielle Ferme wine, size which offers us just about two glasses apiece, unbeatale at $10. Whenever we feel like a really good meal at the last minute, we head for the Elegant Farmer and hope that our not having a reservation won't hinder us.
