“great location!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2008

This hotel is perfect for touring the city of Memphis. It is across the street from the pricier Peabody,(and their ducks!) around the corner from the famous restaurant the Rendezvous and three blocks from Beale street. The room was spacious and clean and the staff was very helpful. Perfect for the average vacationer.

We spent 6 days in Memphis for our vacation. We chose to stay at the Holiday Inn Select in downtown Memphis due to it's location. We are so glad that we did. This hotel was great! It is in a perfect location, within walking distance to Beale Street. (which was a blast). The hotel has a beautiful lobby with a great restaurant and bar. The rooms were nice. Newly renovated. I would have to say that the staff at this location made our stay. They were warm and friendly from check in to check out. Since we were there for several days, they got to know our names and always spoke to us daily. On Wednesday night we enjoyed a General Manager's reception in the lobby from 5:30pm - 6:30pm. I did find out that this hotel does this reception every Wednesday night and all the guests staying in the hotel get invited. This hotel also has a very nice outdoor pool which is located on the 4th floor of the hotel. My husband and I enjoyed our stay here very much and have decided the next time we go to Memphis, we will definately stay at the Holiday Inn Select Downtown.

Had a 4 night stay at the Holiday Inn select in Downtown Memphis in May this year 2008, before moving on to Vegas for 7 nights. The hotel is in a great location for Beale street and the Waterfront and most Downtown sights.
If you are a non smoker make sure you book a non smoking room as the smoking floors reek of stale fags!!.
The Peabody Hotel is just across the Street and is worth a visit because it is a realy nice place and they have the Duck procession at 11.00 and 17 00 hrs -worth catching.
Booked everything over the t'internet from the UK and all went very well, all 6 flights were good and transfers on time and the only glitch was on check in at Circus Circus in Vegas but that's another story.
Had a good tour of Graceland then all the relevant sites worth seeing in Memphis.
Mud Island is free and worth a visit - be aware that there are some people who sleep rough in the park on the approach to Mud Island, we had no hassle but you gotta be aware.
Also a few "panhandlers" who ask you for cash but just blank them and you get no hassle.
It's not surprising because it is really a poor neighbourhood away from the Downtown bit.

  • Disliked — The smoking floors stunk of stale smoke.

Just returned from a trip to Memphis and Vegas and stayed at this hotel during my stay in Memphis, i found it great!

The room was spotless, ready when i got there (about 6pm, flight delayed) the location was great, a matter of 5 minutes from Beale St.

The pool is handy and convenient on a roof level 4th floor, there is complimentary internet acccess in the foyer, and drinks and Ice Machines in the corridors (atleast on the floor where i was anyway)

A great place to stay and would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Not the worst hotel experience I've ever had, but ranks up there. Stayed on the 8th floor (a non-smoking floor) and cigarette permeated through my bathroom so badly it suggested I picked up the habit. Be advised, based on my recent experience and if you're allergic to cigarette smoke, requesting a stay in a non-smoking room at this hotel won't make any difference.

Rooms were relatively clean and towels and linens were all fresh - which is their saving grace. Had this not been the case, this would have probably been the worst hotel experience I've had.

Staff was unprofessional. 'Privacy request' door hanger hung on hotel room door, but cleaning staff insisted on banging at hotel room door early in the morning anyway to conduct service to the room. In fact, they were quoted as saying "up and at 'em" and "time to get up and get out!!" How's that for courtesy?

If you stay at this hotel, be prepared to be treated like a high school student staying at a youth hostel. Privacy is not respected, and for the price, the behavior of staff and services provided are at very low and very unprofessional levels. Certainly not the Peabody by any stretch, but if you're paying $300+ a night for a hotel - you have some expectation of courtesy, cleanliness and professionalism, which unfortunately is not to be found here.

We booked a room through Hotwire and received two rooms at the Holiday Inn Select. Because we booked through Hotwire- they would not give us non-smoking rooms. I did ask if there was any way we could get a non-smoking room but one of the front desk reps told the girl helping us- "No- they have to stick to what they reserved."
"But we reserved through Hotwire"
"Exactly". Ug. I hate it when Hotel staff treat Hotwire guests like second rate citizens.

The smoking rooms would have been OK if the rooms did not stink to high heaven with icky stale smoke odors. The rooms smelled terrible. Even the bedding stunk which made me think that the bedding wasn't so fresh. Plus there were a few holes in the comforter cover. The curtains were also dirty. But the carpet looked very nice if not stinky.

The bathroom was TINY. However- they had nice quality towels that did not stink of smoke. You could tell that they did a renovation of the property and it could have been nice if the room did not stink so bad. The only other thing that grossed me out a little was how dirty the light switches were.

The hotel is in an excellent location and of course- Rendezvous BBQ is right next door in the alley. The breakfast was not great at the Holiday Inn but neither was the Denny's breakfast next door.

I would say that the hotel itself is 2 stars even with the "renovations".

Stayed here for 2 nights at the end of our holiday - a welcome relief after a poor stay at the Heartbreak Hotel.

Room was well sized and clean, quality furnishings with comfy beds, fresh clean linen and choice of pillow. Bathroom very compact but very clean with fluffy towels and nice toiletries. Tea and coffee making facilites in room. Free coffee in reception every morning and free newspaper delivered to room. Free internet access.

Very good location opposite Peabody Hotel and short walk to Beale Street. Did not eat at hotel for no other reason than seemed expensive. Had light breakfast at Starbucks in Peabody Place and meals at Hueys - very good food and service and TGI Fridays across the road - again nice food but service very slow.

Loved Memphis - visited Graceland, Sun Studios, Beale Street - drove to Tupelo - all excellent and highly recommended.
Also visited Civil Rights Museum which was informative but found it to be quite repetitive.

Overall very good stay at the Holiday Inn Select and would recommend.
