“Experience of a Lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our week on the American Queen from St. Paul to St. Louis. Sitting on "The Front Porch of America", and watching the river views as we enjoyed a dinner of prime rib was very relaxing! There were ample places and seating on the decks to take advantage of the river scenery. It was so refreshing to see the people in the towns along the way come out to wave to us and watch the last true steam driven paddle wheeler make her way down the mighty Mississippi! As we went through more than 20 locks, parents brought their children down to the river to watch and wave to us. At every port where we docked, there were representatives from the town to greet us- some with bags of welcome materials. There was always a crowd to watch as we left port with the calliope playing.
On board we were treated like royalty with wonderful food and service. We thoroughly enjoyed the live stage shows each evening. The four young entertainers were top notch. Our only complaint was that there was ballroom dancing only three nights. We had looked forward to dancing each night as had previously been offered on the Mississippi Queen back in 2006. There was some dancing in the "Engine Room Bar" each evening but not true ballroom.
I would highly recommend any trip on the American Queen for those who want a relaxing trip and especially those who love the river.
All the staff went out of their way to accommodate us. One big plus for these trips is that you are on American soil with an all-American crew. For this reason, it is more expensive than an ocean cruise. We would look forward to being on this boat anytime , anywhere!

“Something for everyone, really”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

We took a ride from Memphis to Chattanooga on their annual Civil War tour because I'm interested in the Civil War, but my brother was interested in steam. The history professors on board made it all come alive. We toured the battlefields at Vicksburg, Fort Pillow, Fort Donelson, Shiloh, and Chickamauga, and the guides made it all clear, so that it was much more than green fields and stone monuments. I learned a lot. My brother, on the other hand, was soon on a first name basis with the engine crew. He also learned about the workings of the calliope. We had a couple of catastrophes during this trip-- a crew member got sick and had to be evacuated. The TVA closed a river lock for maintenance, without warning, making the boat take a 60-mile detour on the Tennessee River. And a propeller part broke, something that never breaks, so there are no spares, causing us a long layover in Paducah while a new part was manufactured. The company was open and upfront about it all, and kept us informed of developments as they happened. They gave us discount coupons for our next trip (which will be soon!), gave us free tours of Space Camp, and opened the bars for the remainder if the trip. My brother asked to see the broken part, and they obliged him.

I can't forget to mention the entertaining shows, the band that took requests and played anything you asked without sheet music, the fantastic food (yes, it is possible to get tired of prime rib, if you care to try), the "riverlorean" with his endless, entertaining stories, and the friendly, helpful staff who really do cater to your every whim. Free Coca Cola, and, due to the ship's difficulties, free Margaritas. And that calliope.

“Elegant Cruise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

I took the 9-day cruise down the Mississippi River, from Minneapolis to St. Louis. Before the cruise, the hotel accomodations at Minneapolis were excellent. The tour of Minneapolis/St. Paul was O.K. Bring food from the hotel breakfast buffet, because there is one tiny cold sandwich bar & 1 server for 150 people. Use the bus bathroom, because there was only 1 bathroom at the Gangster Cave for 2 busloads of tourists..

The American Queen was built in 1994 and remodeled about 2 years ago. The rooms are nicely appointed, and bathroom is larger than expected. Warning: the walls are paper thin. The food is excellent in the dining room and front porch buffet. If you are going on an hop on-hop off bus, get your ticket before you eat breakfast. Three new, nice buses follow the boat for shore excursions. The nightly entertainment was outstanding. The wait staff and maid service was exceptionaly professional and friendly.

“Treated like a king and queen on the queen!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013 via mobile

I can't say enough good about our Civil War Tour. It was hospitality and customer service at its best. Every staff member was trained to be friendly and accommodating. The historians on board were very knowledgeable and interesting. They didn't just lecture. They made the Civil War come alive. They spent the week with us and were available to interact anytime. The food and dining service were amazing. Room was comfortable with a large shower. Everything was clean. I can't wait to participate in another American Queen cruise.

“Lazy river days”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

We choose to do this trip as something different. It was different in many ways. We did this trip in September where the humidity was high so you need to check your timing out. The steamboat was very comfortAble and the staterooms adequate, it is however a little tired and does need some renovation work.the crew workers were first class but unfortunately the capitain and his officers distant. There were many opportunities for engagement with passengers but I felt that was limited. We were 8 new zealanders traveling together and not once during the 6 days did an officer or the captain come to see us even for a few second conversation. I think this level need a little more training on customer experience and what is expected , I struggle to recommend this trip
