If you are seeking a modern, ultra-luxurious hotel with a fantastic spa in which charming young ladies, dressed as dental nurses, will place warm and cold stones, individually-selected from South Sea Island beaches, along your spine before giving a full manicure and pedicure, and spraying you from head to foot with the latest tanning aid, this is just the place for you - not. On the other hand if you prefer a place with character, an interesting collection of furniture, excellent game-based food and a magnificent selection of single malts, served in a bar with a roaring fire and a landlord as characterful as his establishment (oh and you like dogs and a delightful, if elderly, cat) this actually could be very much to your taste. Our room was recently modernised and contained a huge and extremely comfortable bed. The bathroom too was big, light and airy, recently modernised with a large bath which took a while to fill (water pressure being a little on the low side) but the water, as a previous reviewer has noted, was of a beautiful soft brown peaty nature and there was lots of it of the hot variety. The only drawback (in November) was the lack of heating in the bathroom, but Mike was completly equal to that challenge and had it resolved the first morning. I suspect that midges are rather more commen than Health and Safety inspectors in the Highlands. The view was fantastic and to open the window in the morning and hear nothing but the sound of the river was magic. Mike failed to produce the promised sea eagles for us (you cannot win them all) but we certainly got a local treat - Duncan, a piper of extraordinary skill and talent, arrived on Sunday afternoon with no less than 5 sets of pipes, and played in the bar until around 1 a.m.. Fantastic. Out of the ordinary, even eccentric but a most relaxed (and relaxing) and interesting place to stay. We shall be back once some running repairs to knee joints (not problems sustained at Tomdoun) have settled down, and we can enjoy the superb walking in the area.
