“Classic hunting lodge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2011

If you are looking for a great place to stay in the remote parts of Scotland, then this is it. The views from the front of the hotel are spectacular, and you are within easy reach of some great walking, including several munroes. If you want to fish then the hotel will put you in touch with Pete Thomas who will guide you, provide tackle, and take you out in his boat - a very experienced angler with superb local knowledge. The house has character and atmosphere; tastefully presented; the bedrooms in the hotel are very comfortable, well-appointed and clean. Breakfasts are excellent; the bar is comfortable, friendly and holds a fine stock of single malts. Mike, the owner, will make you most welcome, and the general ambience is relaxed, easy going, while preserving the traditional sense of a Victorian hunting lodge.

Room Tip: A room at the front will not disappoint.

A stay at the Tomdoun feels like being part of the cast in a British drama of a certain era and it is all about the experience. The combination of the Hotel, the stunning surroundings and Mike, his family and staff put it in a special category of unique experience which we will not hesitate to repeat.

On arrival, we were immediately made to feel like part of the family and as the hotel was quiet for our first night we ate (excellently) with them. After dinner we joined them all in the grand sitting room for an evening discussing and debating and occasionally dipping into a film that was on TV (bizzarrely "Four Weddings and a Funeral" - it felt like we were sitting in an extension of the film set).

The Hotel is well appointed and perfectly comfortable. The food (always important) is excellent and prepared from fresh ingredients - among other things we ate mushrooms foraged nearby that afternoon. The large rooms are comfortably furnished in keeping with the Edwardian style of the Hotel and we felt that this added to the experience of staying there - but if you want bland chain-hotel anonymous furniture showroom surroundings then you might want to consider if a city break is more your thing!

Although I was perfectly happy with our, admittedly dated, ensuite bathroom facilities, Mrs Bear says that she'd be prepared to pay more for modernised plumbing.

But the Tomdoun is really about the surroundings. We arrived after a specacular drive up the A82. This must be one of the world's great scenic drives and not to be missed if you have the time. (Allow 3 hours if you have to get to Glasgow Airport or fly to Inverness which is nearer.) And it is also well worth driving further along the single track road that the Hotel is on to the sea. Even if you don't walk any of the nearby Munros you can walk out along the foot of the sea cliffs at Kinloch Hourn.

We stayed at Tomdoun back in August for the bank holiday weekend. Such a tranquil and remote setting was ideal for a short break from London. There is excellent hiking, mushrooming and cycling nearby. The hotel itself conjures images of times past with the sweeping drive and traditionally decorated interior. Some may criticise the slightly faded appearance of the place, but I think this is integral to its character.

The food was delicious, the dogs extremely friendly, and the hosts Mike and Krysia very welcoming. All round a lovely weekend.

Its unsuprising that the Tomdoun seems to polarise opinion amongst reviewers. it really is as far from a mediocre hotel stay as one could imagine and hearks back to an era of quirky shining-esque hotels with squeeky floorboards, bibulous staff and a full complement of ghosts...

The owner and staff were all extremely friendly and helpful, this is a place to come to to escape mobile phones, huddle by an open fire and quaff a good breakfast wine. they have a good cook, committed to local produce so the deer groaning through the night in the mountains above may well end up on your plate a few days later. the woods abound with mushrooms also, perhaps another good reason to return in the Autumn.

I would say that this is not a hotel for enthusiasts of fine plumbing and scented towels, however the room was clean and the view from it over the Loch quite spectacular.

a real ace up the sleeve of the Tomdoun is the local Gillie Mike, for around £100 a day he'll escort you, kit included, on a fishing trip to catch local monster wild brown trout, from boat or bank, or some very goodly proportioned Pike. if you stay at the hotel you can fish the waters infront of it for free - some really exceptional wild trout fishing.

I cam here with my bride of two days and our 10 week old with a level of fear that a gruff sporting hotel might be the worst place to have landed. we we really pleasantly suprised. The Tom Doun is a gem, long may it last.

Stayed one night for DB+B. Very friendly. Fantastic old shooting lodge but very dated. Shared bathroom, no showers, no tea and coffee facilities, no TVs in rooms but TV lounge and plenty of papers to read. Fantastic location. Good breakfast.

I stayed here for a couple of days while solo hiking in the area. The stunning tranquil setting , great cuisine and friendly staff made my stay very enjoyable. This traditional Hotel has a charm and a wonderful atmosphere.

Nothing was too much trouble for the host Mike and his staff.
Thoroughly recommended.
