“Great Country Livin'”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2007

Stayed at the castle for one night with a bunch of friends while taking a road trip through Scotland and it was great! The front desk staff was so accommodating and friendly. The rooms are comfortable, quiet, and clean. Look out any window and see the green rolling hills of the Scottish Highlands and flocks of sheep in the pasture. The food was absolutely wonderful and made from scatch at the castle. On the first floor is the dinning room and a large sitting room great for reading a book, playing scrabble with the family, or having afternoon tea. This is a place to slow down and spend some quality time with family or friends.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Glengarry Castle Hotel for just a couple of nights. I say "just" with a bit of regret, as ideally we would've liked to have stayed longer. The Hotel has great character in a great location. The service was impeccable, the rooms traditional and comfortable (with lovely views), the food plentiful and delicious. If you are looking for a romantic, old fashioned, well maintained and peaceful Hotel look no further. Thank you Glengarry Castle Hotel.

As Highland Country House hotels go this has to be the bench mark. Log fires; stags heads above the broad pitch pine doors; two lounges in which to take afternoon tea and superb cakes served on silver cake stands; highly professional staff who get the balance between attentiveness and laissez faire just right. Idyllic, rambling grounds right down to the sparkling loch and wide bay windows to view the scene through even in inclement weather. (On our second stay we had unremitting sunshine.) And an historic castle in the grounds. Elsewhere on this site someone worries about the fire precautions. I can't imagine why anyone would focus on fire doors in such a place ... however... if that is the focus of your fears I have to say the precautionary fire alarm was horribly effective and saw me shooting out of my just run steaming bath with alacrity.

We stayed two nights at the GCH during our 10-day stay in Scotland. They were offering a special off-season rate that included lodging, breakfast and dinner, so we decided to book (the hotel is located in Invergarry, a gateway to the Isle of Skye, which we had planned on visiting). We were completely impressed with all aspects of our stay.

We booked a "superior room," which was well-appointed and spacious. While the hotel feels a bit old-fashioned, it is well cared for with great attention to detail and atmosphere. The room had an excellent view of an adjoining pasture with sheep grazing -- extremely charming.

The best part of the experience, though, was the service and meals. Everyone was professional and friendly, and really seemed to make an effort to make our stay a positive one. The dinners were some of the best we had during our trip, making use of locally grown products with a creative flair. We found the wine list to include some of the best deals we encountered in Scotland; in fact, all of their drinks were reasonably priced. The breakfasts were great, too. Lunches and afternoon tea are also available for an additional cost, both of which we tried during our stay and which were, in our opinion, reasonably priced for the quality of the food. The tea included some of the best baked goods I sampled in Scotland. While we had only planned on staying one night, after our first dinner I turned to my husband and said, "I want to stay an extra night!" We were glad we did.

The Highlands experienced a freak snow storm while we were staying in Invergarry, and while we couldn't make it to the Isle of Skye, it meant extra time at the Glengarry. Staying at the Glengarry really saved what could have been a disappointing part of our trip.

  • Liked — Fantastic service, delicious meals
  • Disliked — The shower water was a bit cool -- but that's about it!

What a wonderful surprise to find at the end of a bumpy dirt track, hidden by dense follage! This is a must visit place for old world charm, seclusion, romance, service. We were driving to our next B&B & saw a small sign so stopped in to look. Had a great lunch, my first really great cup of coffee for weeks in a beautiful lounge. This is were I'd go for a romantic getaway!

What a lovely place. We did a one week tour through Scotland and this was the first hotel we stayed in. The rooms have an old fashioned, cosy feel to them, the only thing I wasn't too convinced about was the duvet - there was no duvet but a rug and bedsheets. The location is absolutely stunning, we walked along Loch Oich and River Garry which are both in the hotel grounds. We first weren't sure whether we should have dinner in the hotel, but were so glad that we decided to go for it because the food was delicious and by far the best we had during our holiday. I am not usually into "fancy food" but this was really nice, not too over-the-top. I loved the breakfast too - freshly baked scones! We can't wait to go back.

We stayed here for 2 nights in early November and were surpised to find it so busy! Last stayed in 1970s and it has not lost its charm. The ambience is excellent, very attentive staff, good food and comfortable bedrooms all in a beautiful setting make this an excellent hotel to visit for a short or longer break.
