I stayed here this week as part of a gardening group visiting gardens in South West Scotland.
As a group we recieved excellent service, lovely meals, clean rooms and friendly staff.

I previously stayed in this hotel on four occasions between 1978 and 1986 and was amazed to find that little has changed since then. It was like a step back in time. The courteous, friendly staff were more than willing to attend our every need in a manner more often associated with olden times. A slight musty smell greets the guest on entering the hotel but is not too off-putting and is unnoticeable after a few minutes. The lack of air conditioning was perhaps the biggest problem we experienced on what was probably the hottest couple of days in the year (26-28'c), particularly in the bar, lounge and reception areas and also in the bedroom. Bedroom itself was old fashioned, in need of refurbishment, but clean and tidy, bathroom likewise. The dining room was spacious with no shortage of pleasant and helpful serving staff. Food was excellent and with plenty of choice to suit every taste.

I stayed here twice last year, was very nice and very classy. Only down fall is the swimming pool area, could do with an upgrade as very old fashioned and water has a funny smell, both times I visited. Apart from this had a very nice stay, food was great, 'Masterchef' style dishes. Would recommend visiting nearby town called Port Patrick, it's lovely there and the 'wee' chip van on the pier sells the best fish and chips :D

This was the third time I had stayed at this hotel in the last 10 years or so, therefore I knew what to expect. As with other reviews I would agree that some parts of the hotel are badly in need of an upgrade. However the rooms at still spacious and extremely clean and tidy. The bathroom did seem relatively new with a modern powerful shower.

The bedroom was spacious and a had a modern flat screen tv. The bed was extremely comfortable but was old fashioned in that it had a sheet and a blanket as opposed to a duvet. The room is well equipped with tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water.

The staff at the hotel, as usual were faultless and the service provided was excellent. We only had breakfast and it was excellent. Full use was made of the swimming pool and jacuzzi which were excellent, but the decor surrounding it did need modernising. We also used the games room which was ok, but very old fashioned and could easily be converted into a modern gym with running machines etc.

Overall we enjoyed our stay and I will definitely return mainly due to the high standard of service given by the staff

I stayed in the obviously once grand NWC when I was on business in Stranraer. As previous reviews acknowledge, the staff are really pleasant and attentive and the food in the restaurant is very good. Although very clean, the rooms and the rest of the hotel are in desperate need of refurbishment. I appreciate that they may not get the trade they did in the 1990's, and the ferry terminal moving will have had a negative impact, but they could attract more couples and families with a bit of an update. Gym, Pool and Restaurant close at around 8:30pm!

Would I stay here if I was paying for it? At £80 (more than the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow) the answer is no. Will I stay again on business? For the customer service, food, curling rink (!) and convenience the answer is yes.

We hav ebeen using this hotel for 10 years and it consistently delivers excellent customer service. As a family owned and run hotel nothing is too much trouble and standards are consistently excellent throughout. If you want old fashioned service and excellent food this is the place for you

We have just returned from a 2 night curling weekend here. I was glad I had read TA reviews beforehand otherwise I would have been in for a shock at how out dated the hotel was.

First impressions are good as it's a fairly impressive building sitting opposite where the ferry was situated until recently. There was a kind of musty smell as we walked into the foyer. It seemed to disappear however. Front facing rooms must have a great view. Ours however was overlooking a roof. The room itself was a decent size but the fixtures and fittings were just so old fashioned. The curtains had a couple of hooks missing and the top cover on the bed was frayed. It all really needed put in the bin. The bathroom was the best part with decent towels and toiletries.

Now the good bit! The food was excellent with a great choice at every meal.. I haven't eaten so much for ages. The staff too were very pleasant and all seemed local. For those playing curling, I wasn't, the curling rink is actually in the hotel. It was good to sit and watch however and there was a swimming pool, jacuzzi, snooker, table tennis and darts.

I don't know why this hotel has been left in the dark ages as I was told others in the group have been 'done up' to a good standard. It's not somewhere I'd rush back to simply because of the poor standard of accommodation. Sad really.

Room Tip: Front facing if you want a view.
