“Useful stay for Irish crossing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2012

A useful stop off accommodation when crossing from Cairnryan to Ireland. The hotel was clean, the rooms a little run down, but the staff were friendly and helpful. The evening meal was excellent and the breakfasts were good. It represented good value for money.

We were perhaps fortunate to visit this establishment for a bar lunch during the quiet season but our scampi and chips were served up in under ten minutes, so no complaints there! The scampi was very fresh tasting and crisp and the home made chips as nice as we have tasted in a long time.

I would certainly recommend a visit.

This place has a very good friendly welcoming pub atmosphere right by the harbour. We have been many times. The food is good, although the portions are enormous. A starter is enough for 2. The liver and bacon is enough for 4! They welcome kids and dogs which is great.
But w/e's are very busy. And they can't cope.
We went today (Sat) and ordered drinks and explained we were going to order food as well. When we went to order food a few minutes later we were then told , 'No orders can be taken for another 20 mins.' (And then another half hour to wait?) We left.
The couple next to us said this had happened to them before; they were not told the situation until after they had ordered their drinks.
Such a pity...it's a great place, but we will keep to weekdays in future.

I have used the Crown at Portpatrick frequently during the course of my work and for leisure activities for the past 10 years. It is an excellent place to stay - for those engaged on business, travel, pleasure and recreational activities - it's hospitality and unpretentiousness attracts fishermen, shooting parties golfers - and swimmers.

The hotel offers exceptional value, the accommodation, service and food are excellent: Evening meals are served in both the bar and the hotel restaurant - both to a high standard . . the breakfasts are legendary. The hotel bar is the centre of focus - and a place where visitors have always been made to feel most welcome - the atmospher being enhanced further by the selection of Real Ales on tap - and incoming !. Add to all of this the helpfulness of the staff and you have the complete picture.

My colleagues, friends and I will use 'The Crown' by preference - it is excellent - for the reasons I have outlined above.

Lovely authentic-feeling pub, great feeling of everyone getting along together. The lasagna I had on the first night I was in town was so superb I came back the following evening to sample the steak and ale in a Yorkshire pudding. This was simpy outstanding, and I was well-fuelled for cycling to Ayr the following day. Friendly service and great location, cannot fault this place at all.

The Crown Hotel is a charming and welcoming hotel in the heart of Portpatrick. You enter through the public bar where you can enjoy a pint and some good pub food. Reception is a table behind the bar area. On first impressions it is an old fashioned pub which is definitely in need of some redecoration and refurbishment.

We asked for a room overlooking the harbour and were given room 6 on the second floor. The room must be one of the smallest we have ever stayed in with a single wardrobe, bedside cabinet, drawer unit, small double bed, wall mounted TV and nowhere to put your luggage. Manoeuvering around the room was not helped by the camsile ceiling. It was clean and had an excellent modern bathroom with a great shower. There was plenty of hot water after we had asked for it to be turned on.

As we stayed on a Friday there was entertainment in the busy, warm, friendly bar which is frequented by families, locals and tourists. In the morning we were served a tasty hot breakfast with a good choice. The poached smoked haddock was particularly good.

If you are looking for a small, friendly and quirky hotel then the Crown is the best in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room bigger than no 6
