“A suite with a view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

My wife and I, both in our sixties, recently stayed 3 nights and couldn't fault the place. We had the ground floor of the stables block which is in effect a suite with a wonderful sea view. If you were unfortunate enough to be confined to your room this is about as good as you could get anywhere, certainly at the price. Food was beautifully cooked though the style is perhaps more on presentation than quantity. That said, I am a hearty eater and found 3 courses satisfying. Service was friendly and efficient. Everything seemed to run like clockwork, even down to a welcoming glass of sherry on arrival. Highly recommended.

We recently stayed in the Fernhill which is in the lovely village of Portpatrick with its picturesque fishing port. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We stayed in the stable block. I felt the prices were on the high side although the room was comfortable and peaceful. The room was advertised with lovely views and a spa bath. You could not see out the window unless you stood up. The bathroom needed a complete make-over as the wallpaper was peeling off the walls and the windows were black with condensation. The spa bath was unusable - when I turned on the spa black specs of mould came out of the tubes. I told the receptionist about it and would like to know if it is still in operation!! The food in the dining room was excellent and the staff could not do enough for us. I would definitely return but not to that room!!

Have just returned from three days golfing based on the Fernhill Hotel, it was a great bargain including golf at Cally Palace, Portpatrick Dunskey and Glenluce. The Fernhiil was very comfortable with the room being well appointed (at the price we didn't get a harbour view but who's complaining?). The food was first class and pleasantly different and the staff were extremely attentive and professional, I was particularly impressed by the cleaner who turned off her vacuum cleaner in reception as I was checking out then back on again when the transaction was complete (8.00am - 22 August), a simple touch but speaks volumes about staff training.

Criticisms? - none,

We spent 3 nights at the Fernhill and had a front facing room with a balcony - we were so lucky with the weather and so were able to enjoy beautiful views. Staff were all so welcoming - nothing is too much trouble. Service in the restaurant was faultless - runs like clockwork with well trained staff -a credit to the hotel.
The menu and the food were excellent - beautifully presented - worthy of a 4/5 star hotel! We will be back -especially for the 3 for 2 night offers - a bargain!

Room Tip: During the summer a front facing room worth the cost

All the Macmillan owned family hotels have great staff and real character. You will not find a warmer welcome anywhere and it does make all the difference.

Fernhill could do with a lot of work on its fabric but spacious and homely. Food good, service excellent if a little slow. Shares leisure facilities with the Castle in Stranraer, which are a bit old fashioned but that is no bad thing in our shiny modern world.

Having really enjoyed a recent stay at a sister McMillan hotel, we thought we'd try another and were not disappointed. We were upgraded to a palatial room with separate sitting area in the annexe overlooking the harbour and village. The rooms are traditional in the decor department. They are very clean and comfortable with, in this case a four poster bed. The staff are exceptional from arrival to departure they make you feel as if they really are pleased to see you without faffing and fussing (which we hate). Relaxed and informal is the style for dining and the friendly restaurant staff put you at your ease to enjoy some excellent food. We had the best meal we've had in a long time - nothing out of the ordinary; Celeriac & Apple soup then Salmon with Squash and Parsnip mash followed by Raspberry Creme Brulee, but very well cooked. Icing on the cake is the fact that they welcome the dog so a good time was had by all. Only one tiny niggle was the wait we had for breakfast on the first morning which was 15 minutes to take the order and another 20 minutes to get the breakfast - also excellent when it came. We made sure we got in before 9am on the next two mornings to avoid the rush. Job done no worries.

Room Tip: Rooms in the annexe are large and quiet. Room 24 has an extra sitting room with extensive views of t...

We stay at the Fernhill hotel every year prior to getting the ferry over to Ireland, and they always offer a warm welcome with friendly professional staff.
Their restaurant is Second to none in the area and the picturesque views of the bay just make your stay perfect.
Highly recommended.
