“Not what I expected”

Barend Holiday Village

Jun 27, 2008

Barend was not what I expected to say the least.
First impression of chalet 38 was that the interior was tired and worn but clean enough, although it did have a strange smell that would not disapear even with all the windows open for 5 days. Outside to the front there were workmen tarmacing the road, metres from the chalets balcony, which was noisy and smelly.
The childrens playground was literally two swings, the pub food was tiny portions and the beer garden was a few plastic chairs on dirty looking hardstanding. The small pool and beach were ok and thats it really..nothing else to do on site.
Thank God for the mountain biking at nearby Dalbeatie(6 miles away) and Mabie forest (18 miles away) which also has a fantastic adventure play area, otherwise my kids would have being bored rigid.

I was totally dissapointed with Barend, I feel its the facillities which let it down, the views are lovely and the cabins are ok but Barend could be so much more if they spent money on facillities, a playground, indoor stuff for the kids when its raining, a more homely pub etc, there wasnt even anywhere onsite to play frisbee or badminton.
If you are not active and want to do absolutley nothing then great, Barend will suit you, but if your after something more then I would not recommend Barend :(

I've just returned from a week at Barend with my husband, 2 kids and parents .. not forgetting the dog.

It is a beautiful location overlooking a loch and only a short walk from the beach.

The chalet was superbly equipped - they had thought of everything. We all enjoyed the pool, and the bar and restaurant were great.

The wildlife was a delight - badgers, otters, herons, swans. We will be back!!!

stayed here for 3 nights in the largest chalets overlooking the loch
we were here for a friends wedding so it was location over anything else for our main reason to stay - plesantly suprised, we were in chalet 28 which was well equipped clean and spacous - there were 3 couples and plenty of people popping in and we had more than enough crockery etc - loads of dvds board games included which would be useful to know as its saves bringing them
Didnt use the pool, but it seemed clean enough to look at!
good friday night pub quiz too!
the beach accross the road (about 10 min walk) is fantastically clean, the only thing to noyte is the rapidly changing tide which could be dangerous for little ones!

would stay again in an instant

The beds were very comfortable and the views from the lodge magnificent. Having said that, when we arrived the carpets needed hoovering twice before we could allow the baby to crawl on them because of the dog hairs left by the previous residents. The living areas are generous in size but the kitchen is tiny - not adequate for up to eight people and the oven was not very clean. Apart from the swimming pool (which was very cold) there are no amenities for toddlers but the area itself is lovely and Mabie Park Farm was great for our two year old grandson.

We stayed at Barend Holiday Village in September 2005 and had a fantastic time. We go to Scotland every year and had called here one time to go for something to eat in the bar. Whilst in there we noticed that dogs were allowed in the bar and thats what made us decide to book it the following year. Our dog was fussed over and it was great that we didn`t have to leave him in the car when going for something to eat. The beach at the bottom of the road (Sandyhills) is great and there`s never anyone on there. We are going there again in June 2006 and are really looking forward to it.
