“Great wedding shame about the hotel”

Stayed at this hotel for a wedding, which was great. Although there were a few problems with the hotel, the room we were booked into was not clean on arrival, shower was dirty with hairs and dirty soap in shower, they did clean it when we informed them of this.

We enjoyed the food, but had to ask for our starters to be served. The rest of the party were starting to be served their mains when we finally got our starters.

The bar prices changed each round! My wife was charged less then me for the same round and the other people in the round were also charged different prices...

The next morning we had a cold shower and tea and toast for breakfast. This was due to the fact of a 'mains gas leak in Rockcliffe' although the hotel actually uses cylinders and someone forgot to change the cylinders the night before. We were surprised when the hotel wanted to charge us full price for a cold shower and limited breakfast. The manager was fairly rude and stormed away when we tried to discuss a discount.

My husband and I stayed at Baron's Craig for one night after arriving in Scotland for our 5th Anniversary trip. The location is secluded, relaxing and beautiful. We were met by John, who was very welcoming. Rockcliffe is a pretty little town - we took a walk down to the beach before dinner. We were offered to try their 5 Course Tasting Menu that night, and it was highly worth it. They also treated us to champagne to help celebrate our 5th Anniversary. I would stay here again - very relaxing.

The Barons Craig Hotel! It was perfect! We are from the north of England and we wanted to get away for our big day with just close family and friends in toe. We looked at the lake district as it is only a 90 minute drive away, but then decided it would be nice to get married not far from gretna green. We browsed the internet for a couple of weeks and instantly fell in love with the amazing barons craig! We went to look at the hotel previous to our wedding date which took place on 8th April 2006 and couldn't of been happier with the historic building, grounds and amazing sea views!

When it came to our big day (or should I say weekend) the staff couldn't of been more helpful and friendly; everybody was pleased with the service. The food was amazing here! All weekend there was no problems with the food, infact you got more than you paid for to be truthful! Take my advice and visit this hotel you won't be sorry.

Arrived in Scotland by chance and needed a room overnight. We were accomodated in one of the 'four-poster' rooms, which was very luxurious.
I used to stay at Barons Craig 30 years ago as a child, and had heard some bad reports of it from family over the years. But the new owners are breathing some much-needed life and energy into the place, along with a great sense of style.
The grounds are worth a wander, and the evening meal was stunning. For £25 a head we got a three-course meal that would not have been out of place for twice that in a swanky city restaurant.
Warm terrine of pork and poached egg starter. Roast beef (local, of course). A superb caramel souffle that was done to a turn, and an excellent cheese selection. Also an extensive and reasonably-priced wine list.
Breakfast didn't disappoint either. We went for the full Scottish, including potato scone, and locally produced black pudding. But you can also have kipper, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, or smoked haddock.
I may renew my acquaintance with the Solway coast again soon, and when I do, I'll definitely be heading for Rockcliffe and the Barons Craig.

The hotel is in a lovely location on the Solway coast - so pretty and quiet but easy to get to in a car. It's also a convenient position for exploring both east and west along the Solway coast.

The hotel itself has an "old" part and a newer (1970s) section - we thought we would be in the new block (as we always seem to be when we go to country hotels like this) - so were pleasantly surprised when we were given the room at the top of the tower. The view was amazing!

The room was large and light, with a small walk-in wardrobe and en-suite bathroom, but the furniture/bedding was slightly dated (we usually stay in very modern, stylish city hotels so perhaps have higher standards than most about this). It was all very clean and had nicely homely touches (such as ornaments and pot pourri on the sideboard).

The breakfast was nice - a hot buffet as well as cereals, fruit and yogurts. Porridge and kippers etc could be requested from the kitchen.

We only ate dinner there one night - it was very nice with a couple of vegetarian options. Neither the meal or the food were as expensive as I expected. If we had realised (before it was too late), that the menu changes daily, we probably would have eaten there again.

The restaurant (which is also used for breakfast) is very pleasant - wonderfully light, looking out over the bay, with fresh flowers on each table.

The service at the hotel was excellent - the manager seemed to want to help as much as possible and his enthusiasm was matched by the rest of the staff.

We had a lovely holiday and will probably return there in a future.
