“late room, but it did the job”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2012

Stayed in this hotel during a return journey from the highlands. Downsides were limited parking, tired decor and noisy (but seemingly harmless) locals outside on a Saturday night. staff exceptionally friendly and the food and bar were great. Even the noisy locals were actually very friendly in the bar, even to a soft southerner like me! with a refurb it could be pretty good, but the parking is a real issue.

Had booked here to stay for Wickerman with my wife and teenage daughters - looks OK from outside but reception area looks pretty run down and seemed to be pub entrance as well. Corridors up to rooms were a bit tatty but not too bad. Rooms really disappointing - peeling wallpaper, cracked lino in bathroom, black grouting around bath tiles and looked grubby. Beds and linen looked OK. Both rooms didn't smell fresh. Staff were friendly enough - we didn't stay as it was really disappointing.

I sometimes use hotels in Scotland for business and I need an inexpensive but comfortable place to stay. The Pheasant Hotel in Dalbeattie is just such a place. No frills, basic accomodation, friendly, good bar downstairs and an excellent restaurant. I would return if in the area.

A one-night stay with colleagues. No parking is available. After checking in I was taken to my room (room 2). Faded decor. The heating was off (in November!). There were biscuit crumbs on the chair, although otherwise the room was fairly clean. Had a couple of good pints before going to the excellent Italian restaurant next door for dinner. It was a windy night, and I discovered that the en-suite bathroom window would not close. Nor would the bathroom door! (I guess there has been a bit of subsidence) Had a howling gale blowing through the room. A colleague was in room 1, and had problems getting to sleep because of the noisy drunken locals outside after closing time. She also mentioned that the room stank of chip-fat, I suppose from the kitchen. On the upside, the cooked breakfast was very good. Will be avoiding this hotel in future!

Great welcome, (some) great showers, good mattresses, excellent food and drink - what more could a bunch of alcoholic middle aged (40 - 60) mountain bikers want?

The hotel is definitely dated but makes no pretext to be anything other than warm, inviting, friendly, helpful and fair. We got a cracking deal, including dinner. The bar was well stocked, The kitchen served great portions and breakfast was just what an alcohol-lined MTB'ers stomach needed. Nice touch was being able to get bikes stored (as parking is about 30yds away) and being offered a room to shower in after we had checked out to go and ride.

stayed at the hotel this week as i was going salmon fishing on the river urr the next day, there isn't a car park , we parked round the corner but no problems.
the food in the restaurant was lovely, we had steak pie, fish and chips and cajun chicken, all well cooked and good portions, breaky was superb, full scottish. bryan i think the manager was very friendly and helpful.
dont go to this hotel expecting the ritz, its dated and the rooms are up a few flights of stairs, the deco is terrible in the room, old carpets and wardrobes etc but the place was clean.tv and tea making facilities in the room though.bathrooms are dated aswell but its cheap and cheerful, the bar downstairs has darts, pool, i think it has a jukebox and the prices are decent too, a pint of carling, pint bottle of magners and a gin and tonic cost £7.60 which i thought was fair.
we were only looking for somewhere for a few jars, a bit of grub and somewhere to sleep before fishing and this place was fine. theres a co-op and loads of shops on the main street aswell, theres an italian next door and an indian and chinese carry outs nearby aswell.
the fishing permit shop is within 2 mins walk aswell so would recommend for any fishermen!

After searching for a nice hotel near Kippford, this hotel came up as the closest we were going to get. After reading their website and arriving at the hotel, we were in for a shock. Not quite what we expected, especially being on the main road, and on a corner. There wasn't any where other than the main road to park our vehicle at night. There was no hair dryer in the bedroom, our room was rather cold at night, we had to remove the bedding off the spare bed for extra warmth. The radiator's weren't turned on. No telephone in the room to call down to reception to ask for heating to be turned on. Apart from all the above, the breakfast in the morning was brilliant, staff very friendly. The location was ideal, but the standard of the hotel was not what we had expected.
