Having returned home after a one-night stay here, I felt compelled to defend this place!
My room was warm and cosy, despite the fact the bathroom could do with re-papering. The avocado bathroom suite was from 1973 when the hotel was fitted out, but there's nothing wrong with that. The bath was longer than mine at home and the water was red hot and in ample supply.
The chiming bells from the church tower were audible, but didn't wake me even though I'm a light sleeper.
The reception rooms were clean and tidy though in need of some refurbishment. The evening meal was far beyond my expectations and would have cost a small fortune in a restaurant in a bigger city. The hot self-service breakfast was gorgeous too, with no scrimping. There was also a good supply of cereals, fruits and juices as well as coffee, tea and toast.
The staff were fantastic, with nothing too much bother for them.
I'd recommend this hotel to anybody except those with the highest expectations. It's comfortable and clean, quite homely and very hospitable. I'm back in the area in a few weeks and will be staying there again. A refurbishment is currently under way.
