“Friendly welcome from wonderful staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

Having stayed at the Falls of Dochart Inn with a golf party from New Stevenston for the last 7 years i cant praise it highly enough. The rooms are lovely with some rooms looking out to the Falls. The Staff are first class and cant do enough for you. If you ever want to stay at a place where the staff work with a smile then this is the place for you. See you again next year.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Falls.

Hotel room was TINY, couldnt even walk round the double bed! Had slanted roof which I had to duck to avoid hitting my head on to get into bed and I am only 5ft7.
No TV, radio nothing, so it was a boring night in the bar with only 2 others that were locals.

Our bath leaked and flooded the kitchen below us so we had staff knocking at our door in the morning asking if we were using the bath.

Boring, would not recommend not even to my Granny!

Only plus was the staff were lovely and the food was ok.

In a superb location facing the Falls of Dochart. (Killin itself is one of the most attractive villages in Perthshire.) Our room was exactly as expected in an old highland inn — interesting and characterful rather than large or bright. The food is Scottish and good. Rates are reasonable. Service was friendly. Would be happy to recommend this to foreign visitors.

We stayed a week in the Byres self-catering cottage at the back of the main hotel. First the positives: Aileen and the rest of the staff did everything they could to make us feel welcome despite being clearly overworked. They were chatty, cheery and helpful at all times. The location is also excellent, the hotel being situated directly across from the falls, and the main bar always had a nice atmosphere. There were, however, a few things that detracted from the experience. The cottage, while not being as bad as made out in some of the reviews below, was extremely cramped in the bedroom and bathroom. I’m of average build for someone that is 6ft 2 in height but even I found it a challenge to manoeuvre around these rooms. I imagine people carrying a bit more weight would really struggle. Also, although the cottage was cleaned every day, it wasn’t done so very thoroughly. There were dead bugs all over the place and cobwebs over the windows. Moreover, the horrid stench coming from two of the bed pillows was such that we had to lock them in a cupboard. Again, this can probably be put down to the place being severely understaffed. And finally, the continental breakfast was quite limited.

Normally we would turn a blind eye to these minus points but the cost of the hotel means that they are magnified.

Reading these negative reviews of this Inn makes me wonder if these people stayed at the same place as us! My partner and I had a two night weekend break booked to get away from what has been a stressful year so far and had a wonderful time here.
We arrived at dinner time on Friday night and went to check in at the bar. In a small country Inn like this, checking in at the bar is completely normal; I'm surprised by how many reviewers were expecting a reception with a red carpet welcome. We were shown to Room 5 which is on the corner of the building with two windows overlooking the Falls. We liked the faux-rustic decor and the Iron framed bed was very comfortable. The room as a whole was compact, but not unusually small. If you've come to this part of the country to spend all your time in a hotel room then I suppose you may wish a little more space but if that's what you're looking for in a hotel then you may as well stick with big chains. The way the room is laid out there is no room for a bedside table/lamp so a standing lamp or a wall lamp over the bed would have been good. Other than that we couldn't fault it; lots of storage, a professional quality hairdryer and a small TV. The bathroom is modern with a good hot, powerful shower with plenty quality toiletries.
We ate and drank both nights in the restaurant and were delighted with the food and service. There were three Scottish ales on as well as standard lagers/spirits. There was a selection of malts but not a wide collection. Wwe were able to take our beers over the road and down to the falls to sit and on the rocks and enjoy them as the sun set - complete heaven!

Betty the waitress could not have been more cheerful, welcoming and helpful and the other staff who we met over the weekend were delightful. It was clear when we were eating that everyone else in the restaurant was equally pleased with their food. There was one vegetarian item on the main menu that weekend so I asked in the afternoon if the chef might be able to prepare something different for me instead of having the same dinner two nights in a row and this was happily accomodated. The chef came out as we were eating to check that everything was fine so we were able to thank him for his extra efforts.

Breakfast was a standard Scottish cooked breakfast cooked to order with cereals available as well. Despite closing up the bar at midnight the previous evening, Betty was cheerfully working away first this in the morning as well.

The village of Killin is delightful and very well placed for walking which was our main attraction. If we return to the area we will definitely stay there again as our experience was top-notch.

Room Tip: The small stipend for a Falls View room is well worth it!

Had booked this hotel through another site and on seeing some of these reviews I was worried it could be a bad choice. Completely unfounded - rooms were great, with four poster beds and roll top baths, wonderful traditional atmosphere, great breakfast and cheery, helpful service. Then there is the location and the view which are fantastic. Would not hesitate to come back.

Full credit to the creativity exhibited by the photos of the rooms on the website. Our reality was a small, dark room with torn bed cover and the second most sqeaky bed that I've ever encountered. Breakfast room overcrowded with tables and the scambled eggs with smoked salmon lacked salmon and was microwaved. Friendly staff but that doesn't make up for it. Not that cheap either.
