“Cosy and clean B&B right in the heart of Killin”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2014

Had a lovely stay in this cosy B&B. The place was spotless, well appointed and welcoming. Ample parking on site and the B&B is located right in the centre of Killin within walking distance of all the pubs and restaurants (that seem to all be located at either end of the village!)

My partner and I arrived at this guesthouse at 4pm on a cold, wet Saturday afternoon in February to see if they had any rooms. On entering we spoked to the landlady who seemed pleasant enough and we agreed a rate for the night. The room was very clean and reasonably well equiped as we would expect. However, it was absolutely FREEZING! There was no heating on at all. We had already noticed this was also the case in the hall on arrival. We stayed in the room for approximately 60 – 90 minutes. We had sat on the bed and watched the t.v. but had not used any of the facilities such as tea/coffee or the bathroom.

We went out for dinner (and to warm up!) in a local hotel which was delightful – warm, welcoming and with great staff. Before having dinner, we decided to relocate to this hotel (it was about 6pm) and returned to the guesthouse. We couldn't find the proprietor and so left the key at the reception stand and left. (It was still FREEZING by the way!). I phoned her a short while later to give our apologies but we were not going to stay there.

HOWEVER! As we were checking in at the hotel, the receptionist received a phone call from the landlady's partner, Mr Wouter Van Doorn, asking if we had checked in there! She informed us and I phoned him back to find out why he had called them. He then proceeded to demand that I pay him for the night which I refused to do due to their facilities (the temperature in the room!) being substandard and also because of his aggressive attitude. He then threatened to get the POLICE involved claiming FRAUD!. We thought no more about this until approximately two hours later when, much to our embarrassment, the POLICE did indeed turn up! They told us there had been a complaint made and that they had to “just check we were who we said we were”. To be honest, they seemed as embarrassed as us.

I would not have bothered to write this review as I don't like to give negative feedback. However, today 17th March 2014, we have received a SMALL CLAIMS COURT SUMMONS for the amount of the room from Mr Wouter Van Doorn!!

THIS MAN AND THIS GUESTHOUSE ARE TO BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS!!!

Yes, please avoid us if you are people who treat B&Bs like the reviewer.

Having agreed a rate and having used our facilites, payment will be due. How surprising is that? As to the temperature: we had no guests in that night, so no heating was on on arrival (we al know the cost of fuel, don't we...). It was immediately switched on, but it takes some time to warm up an over 100 year old house. Plus there was an issue with their radiator, to which they drew our attention (rightly so). While they were going out for their meal, this was fixed as we promised them it would be. On their return, they must have noticed that (hmmm; no mention of it).

Apart from the cold, we received no complaints. Indeed, there was no contact until we received a phonecall, a very brief one, that 'something had come up' and they had left leaving the key in the hall. When people leave, we hear that. However, we never heard a thing. So it wasn't leaving, it was sneaking out on tiptoe. No mention of that either. 'We couldn't find the proprietor' is a barefaced lie; both proprietors were in the kitchen, one door away from the hall. And the front door bell will always summon us. And 'sitting on the bed' is quite different from turning back the bedspread and putting weary heads onto the pillows. That is 'using facilities'.

In how far they use beds, and whether or not the bathroom was used (likely it was, considering the state of of it) is immaterial. The room was occupied, so a complete clean and change of laundry must (and subsequently did) happen. The next guests have a right to a pristine room, not one with used pillows and bathroom. In these people's view both the money (laundry) and effort and heating (which would not have been switched on had they not arrived) should obviously be for free... If that was how B&Bs worked, imagine the consequences. Anyone getting tired and wanting a lie-down for an our or two before dinner can just check into a B&B, have a rest, and disappear again leaving the room unusable for the night. So that's a room out of commission for paying guests. Apparently, some people think that's normal behaviour. Any dedicated B&B owner will tell you it is not.

If they had had the decency to come clean about their wish to relocate instead of absconding, something could have been worked out no doubt, and certainly not at the originally agreed rate we will be pursueing now. Just doing a runner is not on. As we hope and trust the sheriff will confirm.

This was the very first time in over five years that anything like this happened to us, and when it does it is highly upsetting. A big thank-you to the local police, who were very supportive and extremely helpful in confirming the identity of the guests (after all, the registration form they signed need not have reflected the truth, and we'd have no way of getting them to see the error of their ways).

There is one thing we do agree on: the Bridge of Lochay is a great place with wonderful staff and excellent meals.

Desiree and Wouter have clearly aimed for perfection. Theirs is a beautiful B&B in a lovely part of the world. Our room, although on the small side, was immaculate. Breakfast was excellent. Evening meal at the Capercaillie (two nights) was very good and we were able to buy provisions for our hiking not far from the B&B.

We stayed @ the B&B during our salmon fishing trip in Scotland.
Our room was perfect and the the view outside as well, everything what you need is there.

The owners (Desiree & Wouter) are pleasant people and they have
a great sense of humor. They will provide you with every peace of info that you need.

The place Killin is worthwhile visiting, especially the Burial-ground of Clan Mcnab and the lovely
waterfall. We had an excellent stay.
