“La Barca-Excellent but not Barca friendly? :-)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

Ambience excellent! Busy staff, though could (for me) be a tad friendlier/chattier? Suppose they were rather busy, but... Food superb - we followed a Shared meat and cheese starter, with 4 Tapas' dishes...and the prawns and meat stew were particularly wonderful; creme to finish. San Miguel on draught - yum (though rather large heads of froth?) and the choice of wines excellent (a tad expensive?) as were the Cava-Sangria and Temperanillo. 8pm visit and the views across the River Clyde at night were surprisingly impressive. No 'Smoking' area so I had to stand outside - and there were no Stubber-plates attached to the restaurant wall! tba? Toilets excellent Falcon porcelain and Kangarillo driers brill. Had taken wife on her birthday but should have mentioned this when reserving as they do do a sombrero + guitar sing-song. Varied clientel from couples to SpecOccasn groups to families and as I said - busy. Nice bar area also. Had worn a Barcelona FC top (and brought another in case they wanted to put one up on a wall) but not even a comment from staff, who did seem to be mostly Spanish? :-( Walls however seemed to be covered with (local?) Art and all(?) were buyable which I liked! A most enjoyable experience! Train Service nearby.

“"Yummy!"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

We went with some trepidation with three children in tow, but it was a grey day and we felt the town was a bit run down so were delighted to walk into a warm gently buzzing atmosphere. There was something for everyone, (and LOADS of garlic!!) although if you have the three or four dishes each it can become a bit pricey per head for what it is...The waiters were lovely and the general ambience was very pleasant, The main course selection was fab with tempura batter as light as light, however the caramel custard was a big let down with no evidence of cinnamon (or much else!)to the three of us that had it. The creme brulee however got the thumbs up and the green tea was delish! I was looking forward to looking at the view but there was work going on next door and two white vans blocked the windows which was a slight let down! Saying all that, we would recommend it and will definitely return!

“Thoroughly recommended!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

First time we had been, on the recommendation of a friend. We'll be telling everyone we meet how good La Barca is! Food is excellent, service is great - nothing too much trouble - and the prices are reasonable. Although we went as a couple, it is very family friendly and if there is a birthday they will embarrass you! I would recommend booking whatever night you visit. They were turning people away on a Wednesday and they are fully booked already for this weekend and next. Surely a good sign!

“You will not be disappointed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

An attractive, tastefully designed, seafront Cafe-Bar-Tapas Restaurant. If you enjoy Spanish tapas then you will not be disappointed. The menu is varied and the cooking compares well to similar fare in Barcelona or Sevilla. Tapas is traditionally an accompaniment to bar drinking, and the busier the bar the better, The British fad, to formalise it and take it away from the bar is of doubtful success. However, in this case, the compromises are acceptable. the service is excellent and the ambience light and welcoming. Some excellent Spanish beers - in rather small bottles - are well priced; Coffee rich and smooth - but why serve the Cortado in a Espresso cup - with foam? The mark-up on average restaurant wines is becoming unacceptable. So I'm not going to single out La Barca. But they do appear to be following the trend.

“Great night out with a group of 12”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

Althought the restaurant was busy, we were very quickly served and the service was attentive throughout the evening. Most of the staff would appear to be Spanish and this adds to the authenticity and experience. Only a few from our group had visited La Barca before and they highly recommended it and the rest of us weren't disappointed. I think they will have increased their customer base.
The choice of tapas was incredible and everything was absolutely delicious. It's great for Helensburgh to have a different kind of restaurant and I'm sure it will do very well.
We had a number of birthdays within our party (hence the night out) and the La Barca staff do an amazing Happy Birthday stunt to celebrate! Great entertainment.
All we need now is some decent Spanish weather!!
