Excellent place, staff, food, wines and location, loved every minute of it, loved the bar, the lounge, the hot scones, the scenery, the soap in my room, it was truly amazing and I am planning back at the soonest opportunity
please dont miss it

We have meant to go this place for ages, and having got round to going for our anniversary , wish we had gone a few years ago - they might have been trying harder then. From reading several of the reviews here it seems the place has gone 'off the boil'.
Our main issues are with the service - when we booked we were told we would get a confirmation e-mail, which did not arrive and we had to phone back several days later - incovenient, and had we known it , a taste of things to come.
On arrival we were asked when we would like dinner . Having said 8 we were asked if we would make it 8.15 as they were busy. At 8,15 we are offered a drink but there was nowhere to have it immediatly available. We were shown to our table around 9. We then waited 30 mins for food. We enquired. The manger appeared and basically told me off for asking, We said we considered the wait unacceptable - he said they were busy. No apology.
When the food started to arrive it was good - more on the technical side than big flavours, and the portions were somewhat small - it was difficult to discern some of the flavours and sometimes a component just meant a smear or a leaf. The breads are good - there is an associated bakery in Callander ( and a fish and chip shop).
The waitresses didnt seem well trained in basics - one just handed me a drink with nowhere to put it down, anouther had to summons help when I asked for a glass of wine.
The breakfast was actualy better - very good quality ingredients well cooked and prompt.
The room we had was nice - a large sitting area with squashy sofa . We didnt try the tv so cant say if it worked or not. We noticed one of the lamps had a very cracked base. The lighting was wierd - despite numerous lamps it was difficult to find a good reading place in the living room or in bed. Good tea and coffee provision, robes etc but would expect this at the price.
Overall we dont think we will return. It is a nice setting and it could be fantastic , but as someone else says on this site there is a lot that could be sorted out easily eg if the kitchen cant cope my suggestions are - a) have less fancy/ fewer courses at dinner b) plan for one sitting, or c) stagger dinner timings and get people to book thier time in advance.

We stayed at Monachyle Mhor 3 years ago and enjoyed it so much that we decided to stay again whilst touring Scotland this year.
We stayed in room 1 which is a 'tailored front-facing King' and which is also unfortunately above the kitchen. It was extremely hot despite having the window open as far as possible and there was quite a lot of noise. We asked about moving but the hotel was full.
Our dinner was also disappointing compared to last time. The food was ok, but didn't quite live up to the descriptions on the menu and the service was extremely slow and lacked the professionalism you expect when paying this much for dinner.
Breakfast was very good.
I hope the Lewis family isn't trying to diversify too much with the result that standards have dropped as this has the potential to be such a good hotel (and was when we previously visited).

To celebrate the 38th anniversary of our wedding my wife and I booked into Monachyle Mhor on 28th July for dinner, bed and breakfast. The basic cost was £277, more than we have ever paid for one night. Although the setting was superb and the staff friendly I have to say that in many ways our stay was very disappointing and we certainly did not get value for our money. I list the following complaints:

1. Our room was very hot, making sleep difficult.
2. We sat down for dinner at 7.45 PM and rose at about 11 PM, an unbelievable and unacceptable span of three hours, with huge inexplicable delays between courses, particularly between main and dessert.
The basic ingredients of the dinner were OK but the helpings were tiny and the menu pretentious, with many microscopic and irrelevant inclusions (e.g. bee pollen!). I have never had soup served in a tiny expresso cup before!
3. When we retired to bed we were disturbed by male staff talking and laughing very loudly and long apparently directly below – clearing the dining room or working in the kitchen?
We were further disturbed by a nearby dog (I was later informed that this was the farm dog) barking incessantly for about three hours.
4. Breakfast was poor, the bacon being of poor quality and my oven-baked kipper partly raw.
I suppose one can expect this sort of service in a cheap B & B, but not in a hotel as highly rated as Monachyle Mhor – I have had many better stays in much cheaper establishments.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Ian cPherson.

After many hours of research, facilitated by google, the hotel was booked and we arrived in glorious sunshine on Sunday 15th August to stay for two nights. The reason for these dates? Schools in Scotland went back on the 16th and after over 30 years of teaching, I wasn't going back.

We stayed in room 9, one of the tailored rooms, which comprised a lounge, bedroom and en suite. Although we didn't benefit from a view, as such, the advantage of this room was that it accommodated our two boxer dogs at a small extra charge. Indeed this is a very dog friendly place and if you can't bring your own dogs then you can 'borrow' one from the hotel.

Living in Edinburgh we have the opportunity to indulge our passion for good food and wine regularly. The food and service at Mhor would hold it's own amongst the Michelin starred restaurants we have sampled. The ambience was informal and the service attentive but unobtrusive.

Will we return, indeed we will, and should I be writing this review, probably not; it will only encourage more folk to discover this little pink gem in The Trossachs.

I travelled to Monachyle Mhor for a special occasion with my husband. We stayed in room 15 (huge with fire, large bath, shower/steam room - bliss!). We also ate three meals in the restaurant - the food was fantastic and we were able to have breakfast outside in the sunshine taking in the amazing views and isolation.

This is indeed a hidden gem - I suspect that it would have more reviews but people want to keep it to themselves and not let anyone else know.

So, if you like good food, relaxed service and funky surroundings with beautiful scenery on your doorstep, this is the hotel for you. I will be back in a heartbeat.

An acquaintance had mentioned that this place was great so we popped in here for dinner when we were travelling down from the north and I am so glad we did. It was superb, we sat in the non conservatory part of the restaurant and very much enjoyed the general ambiance of the place. The food and service was also really very good. I would go here again and again. We didn't stay the night but the drive along Loch Voil was very atmospheric.
