“A hidden gem in the middle of Balloch?!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013 via mobile

Had dinner here for the first time at The Lochside which is the former La Scarpetta and Sarti on Balloch Road. Wasn't sure what to expect, was it going to be another bland, lazy, no thought, non-descript restaurant that we seem to excel at in Scotland because it needs to be cheap? An emphatic NO is the answer. The menu was quite varied and there was also an early evening menu, great value at £12.50 for 2 courses. Everything is cooked from fresh with nothing cooked from frozen or heated up in the microwave. It's clear the chef takes great pride in his food with each dish presented very well and portions just right. Service was relaxed and friendly without being intrusive. Most important of all is that this was really high quality food in a local restaurant which has only been opened for about 6 months. If these standards are maintained I'd say it's got a long and happy future ahead. I'll definitely be back that's for sure. P.S the fish and chips are to die for!!

“Trip Advisor found us a pleasant dining venue and good food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

We were staying near Balloch in self-catering accommodation after the New Year and did not wish to cook. The formal hotel restaurants nearby were just too expensive so soon after Christmas so we decided we would look around the area for somewhere to eat, and decided to use Trip Advisor. Rated 2nd in Balloch and a venue that was clearly, based on the other reviews, trying to make a good impression. We went and they did. In fact we went back again on another evening because we enjoyed it so much.
The ambience, service from friendly obliging staff, and the front-of-house management were of a high standard and we particularly recommend the homemade spicy Houmous appetiser, and the Moroccan-style curry as being particularly enjoyable.

Accommodation on site is limited, but available and there may be other rooms for dining elsewhere in the building as a result, but expect to be seated in the main room which is high-ceiling, wrll-lit through natural lighting/windows. This is fine and the bar is very near but maybe not too romantic if you did not want to share your intimate moments with family groups, birthday occasions or gatherings of friends. Given the time of year, and the mid-week post-Hogmanay timing, any restarant that has a reasonably busy couple of hours in an evening which was also cold and windy is doing well and appreciated by the locals.

Good food, good attentive service (better the first night to be honest, but still good), the time to show an interest and discuss the food/ business with obvious off-comers - these are the things that particularly impressed. I understand some elements of the current menu are about to be changed but the local mussels are worth asking for if you choose to visit. Portions are reasonably generous, wine prices in the £15-£30.00 range for a bottle, and overall prices on a par with the locality and other restaurants we had been to.

Car parking on-site is reasonably generous but the car park surface is a mixture of tarmac. gravel and soil/muddy areas and can be a little dark around the back to negotiate so be careful, and don't wear the best shoes unless dropped off at the front.

There are places to eat in Loss, Balloch, Alexandria and Jamestown.I think we found one that is approaching the best when we visited. I trust it does not disappoint you.

“Lovely meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

While up visiting family for Christmas a few friends recommended we try The Lochside as it was just recently opened and we are sooooo pleased we did. Very rarely do we have a 3 course meal when we go out but we could not resist having a dessert. The started was amazing, then came the main that was even better!!! Chatted with the new owner who is very pleasant and we wish him best of luck. Food was delightful and we can not wait to go back when we visit again!! Thank you.

“Not loch side!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012 via mobile

Went here for lunch, the waitress was good attentive but not in ur face.
The food was excellent , well presented and
Good value for money.
My only slight complaint is that it was not on the loch side, so if u r going here for food with a view - don't , but if u want good food & good service worth a visit.
