We work hard at running our own Hotel so we hoped to relax and let others (well paid by us) enjoy our stay. The reception staff seem to think that ALL scotland is no smoking. The miss understanding of the legislation needs to be understood before scotland tourism deminishes even further!. The room was the worst weve EVER seen, and weve travelled a lot. There was no bulb in the ceiling light, and dust upon dust and grime EVERYWHERE. I actually used the complimentary bar of soap and was on my hands and knees cleaning the toilet area before we could use it due to the strong urine smell. The shower bi fold was hanging off and the shower spurted water constantly due to a leaking washer which was inadequatelly "fixed" by mastic.
The mould on the shower tiles made me feel cleaner NOT showering. The carpet was thick with other peoples hair and disgusting. The bar was WAY over priced as was the food. We scoured all the breakfast tables to find cutlery or glasses that were clean. The staff however were brilliantly friendly , helpful and attentive considering the lack of managerial guidance and care. Sack the maintenance staff, cleaners and introduce decent managers and this place SHOULD be a jewl in the crown of scottish hotels. This place should be avoided at all costs until that happens. Dont take my word for it. Read the other reviews. Pity help scottish tourism if this is what is on offer in such an idillic location.

If only I'd read some of the reviews before I booked this hotel (have stayed at other swallow hotels and was expecting a similar standard).
The decor generally is dated and in a poor state of repair with the carpets being held together with duck tape in several places.
The room had a view of a brick wall and was clearly not cleaned properly and the shower provided barely a trickle of hot water.
The food was not that bad but it was severed literally as soon as it was ordered with barely time for a breath between courses giving the impression that the staff wanted you out as soon as possible.
Apart from the waitress I found the standard of the service to be poor with most of the staff looking as if they'd rather be anywhere else.
On the whole this hotel sums up everything tha tis wrong with Scottish tourism, superb scenery let down by extremely below par hotels, compared to what you can get on the continent in terms of accommodation and service this hotel is a joke.

We like the other review had booked a double room well in advance. Bedspread had holes in it and was also badly frayed, water leaked from the overhead fan light we were told this was condensation but doubtful as it was also raining. The room we had you also had the sound of the fan from the kitchen from 6.45am until 10.45pm so no chance of an early night this also meant the room had wafts of the food being cooked. The Room had obviously not been cleaned properly as a previous occupants socks still under the bed. Carpets joined with duck tape on corridors. We were offered to change to a twin room but this was not acceptable to us when we had requested a double well in advance.

Dining room when you felt under the plates they were not clean and when you looked you could see food still on them. Like wise the glasses and cups were not clean. The charges for A La Carte are too high as the food does not warrant the extra cost. There was only one efficient waitress, a delightful Polish girl, the rest of the dining room and bar staff appeared to be permanently hung over or not interested in their job.

We felt this hotel was geared to coach tours who probably only stayed one night - so not long enough to complain.

When you complain the Managers do not deal with your complain in a professional way.

Nice spot, good views of Loch Long & surrounding scenery.

Hotel in need of refurbishment, starting with the windows, (draughty old sash windows).

Restaurant produces nice food and the staff are helpful.

It would have been nice to choose where to sit, especially as there was plenty of space.

Cutlery could be cleaner.

Evening entertainment is of poor quality & bar prices are expensive.

I understand that the hotel had been taken over by new management a couple of weeks before we stayed. So there may be some improvements in the near future.

Overall quite good value as part of a cheap package, but conditions could improve and would pay a little more if they did because the views from the rooms over the Loch and Arrochar are well worth the visit.
