I stayed in Cameron House in February 2008, and although my visit was some time ago, after reading some of the bad reviews, I thought I should take the time to put my experience down on virtual paper!
Firstly - the setting. As so many people have already stated, the location is perfect and the surrounding views are breathtaking. I spent many a childhood holiday in Loch Lomond, my gran lived there, so it has always been a special place close to my heart.
My first stat to Cameron House was in 2004, before it was taken over by Devere. When I visited last year it was clear that many improvements had been made. The hotel had been completely refurbed, and although the dark decor in the hallways and bedrooms may not be to everyone's taste, I think it's a marked improvement on what was there before and personally I think it looks great - Very Mal Maison esque with tealights at reception and the heavy materials used in the rooms.
There was still some work to be done to some of the rooms and when we checked into ours we were told that we were one of the first to stay in our room since the refurb. The first disappointment was the TV - when we switched it on it looked like it needed tuning and the picture was all grainy - but no amount of tweaking by my boyfriend could get the picture to settle. The toilet did not flush - and so when we called reception we were told someone would be up right away. Half an hour later there was still no one to fix the toilet so we called again. Eventually someone did arrive and the toilet was fixed within minutes by a friendly handy man, unfortunately the TV was unwatchable for the rest of our stay, even though we did call several times and ask for someone to take a look at it.
We ate at the Claret jug near to the spa, because the restaurants at the hotel were still going through their refurb. The shuttle was prompt and it only took us a few minutes to get from the hotel to the restaurant, but the food there was over priced and very disappointing. I had mussels to start with and they were so salty I could not eat them. When I mentioned this to the waitress who took away our plates, she stared dumbly at me and said, "Oh, I'm sorry about that", but never offered to take the item off the bill or provide a replacement. Mains were good but nothing to rave about, and service, especially for drinks was extremely slow.
The second night of our stay we ate in the Duck Bay Marina next door. I have been going there for years and although the place looks a little dated now, don't be fooled by the decor and pub like atmosphere - the food and service is excellent and I would recommend eating there if you are looking for great food at an affordable price.
We had breakfast in bed each morning at the hotel - which was a nice touch and always arrived on time and was excellent.
We both sampled the spa and I must say this is one of the nicest spas I have been to, tops Gleneagles - if only for the fantastic outdoor hotub overlooking the loch. The treatments are great and the therapist I had was very attentive and knowledgeable.
On checking out we were a little late (by means of 5 minutes) in getting our bags out of the room, and we got a rude call from reception to remind us of our checking out time. I could understand if we had been 10 or 20 minutes late, but I thought this was a bit excessive for a 5-minute delay. When checking out I also found the reception staff to be cold, and not one wished us a good onward journey or thanked us for staying at the hotel, which again I found disappointing, especially considering what they charge at the place.
All in all we had a lovely time at Cameron House, but there was certainly more that they could have improved on. Customer service, attention to detail and the quality of food in the hotel restaurants were the main issues we had with the place, an although Cameron House is stunning in it’s location and overall presence, there is work to do before it can be ranked up there with the likes of Gleneagles or The Barmoral.
