“entertainment break”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

Just returned from a Shearings 5 day entertainment break, the hotel, food and staff were really good, everwhere was clean and tidy, its best to upgrade your room too. What failed was the so called entertainment side of the trip.
Monday featured a singer, Margaret Zavaroni, what an an utter waste of time. Gary the resident entertainer tried really hard to put his turns over but sadly failed a lot of the time.
The films shown in the afternoons showed ancient clasics like The Pyjama Game and Indiana Jones, real relics of the past !!
There was not one spot of any type of dancing offered, a tea dance or an hour spot in the evening would have been a bonus, so the only alternative was to sit and survive the very limited and spaced out Scottish Piper and some Scottish dancing, the only saving grace on the last night was a short turn by a great singer who done about six songs from the musicals. So overall what could have been a really good break was in fact a very damp squid with endless hours of just nothing. No wonder they give you a £50 in house spend, its to drown your disappointment.
Plus, as usual its a late arrival at the hotel on day one, and an early departure when you leave, cases out at 6.30 a rushed breakfast and out at 8.00, why, life should'nt be that rushed.
Could have been a really good break, but would not return because of the lack of decent entertainment.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a seaview room, they were I think bigger, plus you have the view.

I'm sorry to see you felt the entertainment was not very good, it really is not normal for us to have complaints about this. Many thanks for the comments about the rest of your stay I'll be sure to pass them on to the team.

I stayed here last week (1st April-5 April 2013) with National Holidays and it was one of the best holidays I had, I wished I didn't want to leave. The staff were the most friendliest I have come across, Esp Paul he is a hoot that I have booked up National Holidays and I.m coming back in July cause I miss having a giggle with him. My room (sea view 109), was spot on and it was ideal for me and it cleaned every day and I hope to stay in that room again. Hurry up 8th July.

Room Tip: Book a sea view room

This hotel is well situated overlooking the promenade, not far from the ferry pier. Access is up a steep hill and parking was a bit tricky although I could have secured a personal parking place if I had paid extra - we parked in the street! I was really pleased with the quick check in and the large , well furnished sea view room I had requested. No toiletries but the information book in the room said these could be requested free of charge from reception. The bath and shower were first rate with lots of hot water. Things weren't quite so good down in the huge dining room. We wanted to charge our carafe of wine to the room and this seemed to cause great difficulty - it appears we should have registered our credit card and got a red stamp at check in but this had not been offered. Non of this was helped by the communication difficulties with the staff, most of whom were Eatern European. They were very pleasant but their English was generally poor. The food was fine and there was a reasonable choice although service was very slow. Breakfast was totally waiter served which you would think would be a good thing but it all took so long. It appears also that you can't have an orange juice AND a cereal/ porridge but had to choose. The cooked breakfast was fine although I wonder why a hotel that is so proud of its Scottish roots then serves potato hash browns rather than Scottish potato scones!! Also, a bit of black pudding wouldn't have gone amiss . The entertainment was very good if you like that sort of cabaret. My daughter didn't enjoy it as much as the other guests - probably because she is half their age which is the age group (60-80) the hotel appeals to. The Rod Stewart tribute act was very good and looked and sounded the part. He had umpteen costume changes in the hour or so he entertained us. One little gripe was the reluctance of the bar staff to give me some ice in a glass as it was "needed for the drinks"!. Having said all this, I enjoyed my trip very much but a little bit more attention to what goes on in the dinin room and bars would much improve it.

Room Tip: Pay the little extra to get a sea view.

Thanks for posting your review on our site and giving me the opportunity to apologise for the problems you encountered in the dining room. As you may have seen from many previous postings we do not generally get complaints about service in the dinig room, but I will certainly look into what happend. With regards to the staff response to you asking for ice, we are experiencing a few problems with guests bringing their own drink into the entertainment room. As you can probabaly appreciate this is somewhat dissapointing especially when you consider how good value these weekend breaks are.

We spent the Easter weekend at this hotel, and were happy with the value for money.
This was once a grand old Victorian building, which was obviously the place to go in Rothesay.
It is now over 120 years old, and, as you would expect, it's doing a fair bit of creaking and groaning!
The rooms are a reasonable size, and are equipped with everything you would expect, apart from a trouser press, but, who really uses them!
The meals are fairly tasty, the breakfast is not the biggest, portion wise, however, you realise that it is more than sufficient, as you only eat too much if there is more.
Yes, the decor needs a lot of work, however, if £5 million was spent doing the place up, you wouldn't get 3 nts DBB for £99!! It's a trade off, you can't expect everything.

Oh what I would do for £5 million pounds to spend!!. Thanks very much for the very balanced views you posted on our site. It is important to us to offer value for money and it's good to see guests recognising this.

Just got back from an Easter Weekend at Glenburn. We stayed here before a number of years ago and thought then that the place was a bit run down but not too bad value for the money. Went back expecting it to have had a bit of a face lift since last time. Nope, still run down, poorly decorated, worn carpets, bedroom windows that don't open and are not quite closed. Room 324 shower is uncontrollable, one minute it's fine then it goes either freezing cold or red hot.
I have seen the Hotel manager's responses to other similar comments regarding the decor and how times are hard and money is tight but how much is a tin of paint? People don't expect brand new at these prices but pleasant fresh decor would make a massive difference! Lack of a little repair as and when required means lots of money now needs to be spent to bring this once beautiful hotel back to it's former glory and it is not happening. Are Shearings just going bleed this place dry and let it rot away 'til it falls down? I hope not it would be a terrible shame!
The cost involved putting a sign on the hotel wall stating that it is a "Bay Hotel" could have been much better used inside on the decor!!
That's the down side over with, on a more positive note the staff are great, service is mostly good dining room staff are run off their feet during meal times but always have a welcoming smile and a cheery word. Meals are not gourmet but are quite good, what can you expect at the prices they charge? The drinks are a bit expensive, entertainment was ok but not as good as on our last visit but we still had quite an enjoyable weekend. Special thanks to the Bar staff and Nico and the rest of the staff in the restaurant for looking after us, the Easter Eggs were a nice touch at breakfast too. Thanks
COME ON SHEARINGS invest some cash into this place before it's too late!!!

Room Tip: Maybe all the showers on the top floor are the same so book a room on a lower floor

Many thanks for your review, I'm pleased to see that in the main you seemed to have enjoyed your break at the Glenburn. With regards to your comments regarding the decor and how much is a tin of paint, well so far that "tin" of paint has been nearly £40k this year. As you say you noticed my comments from previous postings, we have refurbished 12 bedrooms at a cost of £36k. At present the corridor these rooms are on is being decorated, almost £400 for that "tin" of paint, £300 for beading, and then there's the wages for the painter. With another nine corridors to go that'll be nearly another £9k. Unfortunately with a building this size a tin of paint doesn't go that far, but we are investing. As another reviewer stated " for what they offer at these prices how can they make a profit", we do, it's not much but it it is being put back into the hotel.
