Owner description: Cross the drawbridge over the moat and climb the "bloddy stair" to the circular ramparts, or descend into a forbidding pit prison. This doughty stronghold, built in the 1200s was twice besieged and captured by the Norse, who, battered down the eastern wall with their axes. A short film tells this remarkable story.

“Enjoyed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2014

This looked like a ruin, but once we were in the ruin it was really interesting .... we could climb up stairs and find other things and go down winding stairs, even the shop over the moat entertained us, and there were some swans having babies under a tree.

“the castle”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2014

the castle is situated in the heart of rothesay town, the entrance is a drawbridge over a moat which was the best area for me of the castle, not much to see inside but you could see where they are still repairing parts of it

“Wonderful moat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014

Wow...what a wonderfully landscaped moat. Not the original moat but adds to the vista of the castle. Very interesting and very well kept. Friendly staff. Informative display and video.

“In ruin but very interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2014

Lots of information around the castle. Very interesting castle. Had no idea the island was subject to squabbling between the Scots and the Vikings.
