Unfortunately it was rather quiet the Thursday evening we visited, but it did seem a little run down. One of our party likes vodka with diet lemonade/7UP/Sprite lite, but as hardly anywhere stocks this, they usually have a can or two in their bag to ask if they have upon purchasing the vodka. Most places are usually fine with this. However the Esplanade staff were dead set against this, especially as her can was open. Fair enough she said they would not tolerate open cans, but if you don't serve any diet lemonade at all, what's the harm in using your own? There was no attempt to offer us any alternative and the atmosphere got a bit sour then. So we left and enjoyed a great meal at No 29 instead, with the diet 7UP.

The Esplanade is an extremely popular eating place and it's a pity you didn't stay to enjoy the fayre. Yes we do not allow food or drink to be brought on to the premises unless there is a very special reason and I'm sorry if this caused an atmosphere. An open can would definately be taboo as we have no control over the content and we are required to adhere to strict regulations and licencing laws with regard to food and drink. We are pleased that you enjoyed a great meal at another restaurant although we think it is a bit unfair to give a poor rating for something that is completely out of our control.
