“Absolutely Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013 for a stay in April 2013

Spent one week of the Easter holidays here with husband and two dogs (English Springer Spaniels aged 13 and 6) and we all had a fantastic time. Glad we had a Range Rover to tackle the track up to the cottage because of the amount of stuff we had to carry. The cottage facilities were excellent apart from the fact that there was no casserole dish although I had pre-prepared a meal in my own casserole dish for our arrival on the Saturday evening. The bed was comfortable and everything was very clean. Our dogs (and us) had a fantastic time - just the ticket to be able to open the door and let them out without any worries.

“Peace, perfect peace!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013 for a stay in February 2013

After viewing the photos of this rental property on line, we were quite excited about our stay at Hillview Cottage, but the pictures don't even do this beautiful escape justice.

I stayed with our two young children and had a wonderful time. The views from the cottage were simply stunning; out over the sea to the shores of the Isle of Bute and the snow capped mountains of the Isle of Arran in the distance. It couldn't have been better. We felt completely relaxed in the cottage, it was spacious and airy and had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable, including a well equipped kitchen. The grounds stretch over a very safe bridge over a small stream to a large area of land beyond which was fun for the kids to explore and play.

The owners were wonderful to work with. All in all a great experience and we will definitely be going back!

“Lovely location, a bit difficult to access”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013 for a stay in July 2012

Hillview was a wonderful place for two weeks of escape. Our little girl loved being outside and able to play in such a wide area with a swing and hammock. The steep access road proved difficult to us when we first arrived after lots of very heavy rain had washed away the top surface in some places and it was down to the bare rock. Many times we left the car at the bottom of the hill and walked up - a pleasure in itself. The stove was probably the best we've experienced in all the lets we've been to. The whole surrounding area was beautiful and a trip out on Donald's boat to fish for mackerel is a definite. One evening while reading quietly we were joined by a tiny bat - all part of the experience.
P.S. Teapot required!

“Freedom”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013 for a stay in November 2012

This is my third stay at the cottage and every time I've felt completely refreshed and ready to go on return. Thanks so much for such a great break, again; a real get away from it all, detune and relax. It’s a very romantic rustic cottage; wonderful in the evening with the candles and oil lamps and fires. The freedom of space and silence was marvellous, and scenery and views breathtaking, we even had quite a bit of winter sun too! The stove is a marvel and works very easily, unbeatable at night.
We managed most of the recommended walks and hidden beaches and went out and enjoyed some lovely food too. Will be back again and probably again and will recommend to friends and family. A great place to think and write and play music and recover. Every time we go it seems to get better :-)

“A very special place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013 for a stay in January 2013

Hillview Cottage was everything we had hoped it would be and more.

The owners have done a wonderful job in retaining the rustic feel of the cottage whilst making it a cosy and relaxing retreat. It was lovely to go to bed with the fire glowing in the grate and flickering candle light.

A great spot for feeling away-from-it-all but also close to the lovely village of Tighnabruaich which had all we needed by way of a grocery store, dog-friendly pub, great food and friendly locals. Lots of scenic woodland and coastal walks right on the doorstep.

Be prepared for building fires and filling oil lamps, which we found a therapeutic change from our usual routine.

The journey from the ferry at Dunoon is absolutely stunning, have your camera ready - we spotted deer and red squirrels. Make sure you arrive in daylight hours as access is tricky in the dark until you get to know the track. We arrived mid day which gave us time to get our bearings before dark.

The cottage owner was very helpful and did all he could to make our stay wonderful.

“Secluded, cosy and romantic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013 for a stay in October 2012

We stayed at this lovely cottage for 5 nights in October. We took the ferry which was very easy and as you drive closer to Tighnabruaich the scenery gets more and more spectacular. The directions were excellent and we managed to get our bog-standard astra up the drive where we were welcomed by Peter at the cottage.

The cottage itself is lovely. In a beautiful secluded spot with a river running by and stunning views out to the Kyles of Bute. Although simple and rustic, it has everything you need. The fire keeps the cottage warm and cosy and as long as you've had it lit for a few hours the water is lovely and warm. The kitchen is well equipped. We kept all food and drink in a cool box in the back bedroom which kept it fresh.

We went for a relaxing break, which was very easy to achieve. I would recommend going in October as the autumnal colours were stunning. We went for numerous walks and there were a variety of pubs within walking distance if we fancied a pint or two.

A few tips: take slippers for inside and wellies for out. A headtorch is useful if you plan to do any cooking in the dark. Light a bonfire outside (Peter will show you where this is possible) and do some star gazing.

We had an excellent time and felt thoroughly relaxed by the end. We will definitely be returning. I can not recommend this place enough.

“A great rustic getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

We had a wonderful stay at Hill Cottage. It's rustic, as the ad says, but that's what we were looking for. It takes 4 hours to heat enough water for a bath, and you should expect simple evenings in cooking, eating and playing board games beside the wood burning stove! It's in a beautiful location with views over the loch from the garden, and surrounded by good walks up along the river and in the woods. On our journey to and from the cottage each day we twice saw a deer and always saw/heard plenty of birds. Plus the ever gushing river. The only thing I would say is that the track up to the cottage is hairy - we only drove up it once, on our first day, and parked at the bootom thereafter! It would be fine in a 4x4 or bigger car though. Anyhow, walking the last bit just adds to the cottage's sense of really getting away from it all.
We cooked over a open fire one night which was fun. The cottage's kitchen is suprisingly well equipped for rustic accommodation - great pans and plenty of everything you could need in the way of utensils and so on. We used the second bedroom as a larder to keep food as cool as possible - keeping the door and curtains closed and keeping the ice box in there.
The owner called us before we booked the holiday to let us know what to expect - living without electricity does make for a bit of a change! And there's a lot of information provided about living in the cottage as well as things to do nearby. We ate out at the Royal Hotel a couple of times which was lovely, great service, and another highlight was a sightseeing boat trip from Tighnabruich pier. Definitely recommended. There is also the beautiful beach past Millhouse a couple of miles down the road.
The cottage delivered everything we expected, and we loved it. Definitely would consider going back again in the future.
PS. The midges are as bad as people say. We took plenty of "Skin so Soft" lotion and there was also a bottle in the cottage - this is essential!
