“Superb!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

This place is the best wee eating place in town. The menu is varried and there is a great selection of fresh home baking on offer. The staff are so friendly and always willing to suggest something a bit different. I hope this place is there for a long time to come!

“super”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

I went to this restaurant because of good reviews on Tripadvisor and I certainly wasn't disappointed. I went in for coffee and a scone........lovely fruit scone with jam and cream......and it was so good, I went back for lunch!! It too was super. I had a wonderful smoked trout and prawn salad and it was fabulous, a great selection of salad. To finish, I had a piece of fruit slice, again wonderful. This was a real find.....thank you Tripadvisor!

“Tucked up a back street but worth seeking out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

We stopped here for lunch and were delighted that we found this place.

The food is all freshly prepared and reasonably priced. The home made soup is delicious, and the home baking superb.

It does not open all day, (10am until 4pm) and it would appear to be very popular with the locals who know exactly where it is! If you are a tourist, you might have a problem finding it!

Any time that we will be back in Lochgilphead, we will certainly return to the Smiddy.

“You haven't tried a real salad til you try one here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012 via mobile

The Smiddy in Lochgilphead, Argyll is one of those wonderful places that people who have been in Lochgilphead several times have managed to miss. It is a tiny, white stone smiddy tucked away just off the main street, and they specialise in good, healthy food.

Indoors it is very small, a little dark but also very cute. The stained glass window is really pretty and adds colour and brightness to the room!

We ordered the soup of the day which was Cream of Leek & Onion. It was served with whole meal bread, butter, margarine, dipping oil and soured cream. It was absolutely gorgeous! The bread was so soft and unlike most whole meal bread it wasn’t too bran-y. I’m not usually a huge fan! The soup was just so tasty. Loads of flavour!

My main course was one of the house salads – Smoked Trout & Prawn Salad.

It falls under the category of “do I eat it of frame it?!” The trout was served smoked, the prawns in a Marie Rose sauce, sprinkled with chilli. The entirely home made salad consisted of: potato salad, coleslaw with cranberries, grated carrot with sultanas, lettuce, mixed bean & pulse salad, tomato pasta salad and to top it all off there were pieces of fruit scattered over the top and also used as a garnish. Namely, strawberry, blueberries, peach, pineapple, white & red grapes, kiwi, orange and lemon.

The Smiddy is one place where you can be treated to gorgeous (visually and taste-wise) food but leave totally guilt free. Well, that’s if you avoid the home baking…

“DELICIOUS FRESH FOOD”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

We had lunch in The Smiddy Bistro, Lochgilphead on a wet Saturday in September; this was our first visit and we were impressed. The food and drinks menu was varied, the food fresh, beautifully presented, and served by pleasant staff. We had garlic bread, a delicious chicken and ham terrine served with beetroot chutney, and salad with various leaves and fruits, followed by tea and home baked blueberry sponge cake. The atmosphere was welcoming and the premises spotlessly clean. We popped in again for lunch a week later on our journey home; we'll definitely go back on our next trip to Lochgilphead.
