We splashed out on this "upmarket retreat" (according to the Rough Guide) for the last night of our holiday, but I wish we had saved our money. The fabric of the room was very worn- knackered soft bed, carpet in the bathroom (yuck), bathroom fan broken, bedside lamps not functioning, curtains falling off the rails, mysteriously stained towels etc. I've stayed in nicer Travellodges. The whole bedroom was dominated by an enormous wall-mounted flat screen TV, which was the only new thing in the place- and the one thing I wasn't remotely interested in. Communal areas were not especially cosy, and the bar was completely dead when we came in at 2215, in complete contrast to the jolly atmosphere in the hotel bar we had just left (Pierhouse Hotel, Port Appin- gorgeous!). Breakfast was no better than at the B&Bs where we stayed earlier in our trip, though there was more choice. Staff lacked the human touch- one was quite bossy with us when we said we probably wouldn't book in for dinner, going on about their "two AA rosettes" but refusing to supply even a sample menu. We got another dressing down when we checked out - "Oh, you should have stayed for dinner". Be warned, many rooms don't face the loch but a really run down car park, featuring cement mixer, odd bits of tubing etc. This was my last holiday before having a baby, and I was gutted.
