There seem to be a lot of mixed opinions about this place, and that is understandable. Our rooms were adequate, but not great. The food was very good - well prepared, with fresh ingredients and good, friendly service. The front-desk was probably the weakest part of the experience, and that seems to be a consistent complaint. Depending upon which manager was on duty at the time, the service from the front desk varied in quality from being very helpful and accomodating to almost ignoring our inquiries.
Also note that this is an old sheepherder's house that has been converted to a hotel. That's part of the charm, but I think some of the expections that are created by their website don't prepare you for the fact that it is a small place, rustic and very relaxed, with limited services and facilities. Also, the prices do seem to be a tad high for what you get, but I'm sure that's driven largely by the beauty of the location. If however, the beauty of the location is not your principal concern, then it may be overpriced for you.
The location is beautiful and is very nice, if you simply want to relax and look at the loch, eat well, read or take a walk. Although, I will say that they could put a few more sitting spots (benches) near the water, so that you don't simply have to walk down there and stand while you take in the view. Beyond those rather sedate activities listed above, it's a 2 mile trek to the nearest pub and 10 or so to the nearest town. There is a nice little bar area in the hotel, but it closes pretty early. Again, if isolation, beautiful surroundings and relaxation are what you crave, this could be your spot.
We had wanted something quiet and peaceful, but with closer access to more activities. This was my fault for not investigating more closely, so I'll take credit for that bit of disappointment. It was nice, but in the end, we wished we had stayed in or nearer to Oban.
