“Daylight Robbery”

Taychreggan Hotel

Jun 14, 2007

This was to be a romantic weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary and what a disappointment! We mistakingly thought that the price reflected the standards - TOTALLY WRONG. This has once been a lovely hotel in a beautiful location, the location remains the same but the hotel is sadly a shadow of it's former self. The external paintwork is in poor condition, the woodwork is rotten and the gardens sadly neglected. Our 'junior suite' was a pleasant enough room but the decor required major attention - stained carpets and a broken bath panel. No television and drab furniture. The manager was extremely unhelpful and so we left without being refunded our deposit. Not an experience we would like to repeat.

“No view, poor standards, rude staff - steer clear!”

Taychreggan Hotel

May 6, 2007

We booked a loch view suite via the internet. On arrival we found no loch view (see photos), frayed towels, dirty carpet an cheap furnishings so we changed hotels as hotel manager/owner's attitude was awful. This hotel's location is stunning but its exploited by the price and the misleading room descriptions on its website. If you want a truly magical stay try the Ardanasaig, a few miles along the road but a million miles better!!

With just a few improvements, this could be such a fabulous hotel. But like others who have written reviews here, we found our experience unfortunately lessened by the guest rooms themselves.

First, the plusses: The setting is just stunning. On one of the most beautiful lochs in Scotland, it is surrounded by woodlands and offers some great walks. The main building is a wonderfully homey old farmhouse, and more recently-built additions (which house the guest rooms and dining rooms) are tastefully done, in keeping with the older parts of the hotel.

But those guest rooms! I just can't understand how a hotel that clearly aspires to be great can allow their guest rooms to stay the way they are. Our carpet had stains, and the furniture, curtains and bedding all were out of the 1970s. The bathroom was functional, but again...all older fittings that needed to be updated.

The same for the dining room, particularly the curtains. They frame stunning views of the loch, but really detract from it. Appear to haven't been replaced since the 1970s. And while the carpet was cleaner than the one in our room, it was just inappropriate for a dining area that was trying to look stately and charming. Indeed, it was completely out of place in comparison to the decor in some of the common rooms in the older part of the house, which were much more tastefully decorated. It's almost as if it were two different hotels!

The food itself was excellent, however. If the owners would just spend a bit of money fixing up the guest rooms and the dining room, they would have a hotel that could rival the finest in the Highlands.

We just returned from 3 nights at Taychreggan. We stayed in a Superior room and it was very comfortable and quiet. The food and service were excellent. The staff really cater to the guests. Great location for touring the area and we really want to return.

“Great location, but overpriced”

We stayed in the most expensive suite in the hotel; it looked lovely on the website. However, the quality of fixtures and fittings was no better than those in a travel lodge. At £162pp per night, i expect alot better. The bed was a double, not a kingsize and the furniture was cheap and nasty. The public rooms were just not in the same league as other hotels we stayed at in Scotland: the lovely Roxburghe in Kelso, Ballathie House in Perthshire and the superb Glenapp Castle in Ayrshire. In fact they were more reminiscent of a run down pub.

The food was reasonably good, if served very quickly with no gaps between courses. The service was just satisfactory with the exception of the manager who provided good service.

I would not stay here again in spite of the loch location as it is vastly overpriced. The hotel has a captive audience, because of the location, and exploits that in its pricing.
