With just a few improvements, this could be such a fabulous hotel. But like others who have written reviews here, we found our experience unfortunately lessened by the guest rooms themselves.
First, the plusses: The setting is just stunning. On one of the most beautiful lochs in Scotland, it is surrounded by woodlands and offers some great walks. The main building is a wonderfully homey old farmhouse, and more recently-built additions (which house the guest rooms and dining rooms) are tastefully done, in keeping with the older parts of the hotel.
But those guest rooms! I just can't understand how a hotel that clearly aspires to be great can allow their guest rooms to stay the way they are. Our carpet had stains, and the furniture, curtains and bedding all were out of the 1970s. The bathroom was functional, but again...all older fittings that needed to be updated.
The same for the dining room, particularly the curtains. They frame stunning views of the loch, but really detract from it. Appear to haven't been replaced since the 1970s. And while the carpet was cleaner than the one in our room, it was just inappropriate for a dining area that was trying to look stately and charming. Indeed, it was completely out of place in comparison to the decor in some of the common rooms in the older part of the house, which were much more tastefully decorated. It's almost as if it were two different hotels!
The food itself was excellent, however. If the owners would just spend a bit of money fixing up the guest rooms and the dining room, they would have a hotel that could rival the finest in the Highlands.
