Upon checking in and finding that my room had no shower (only a bathtub) I asked to be transferred to one that did. Unfortunately, the only room available with a shower forced me to sacrifice the convenience of a double bed and accept two single beds. The bedding was old and had springs that creaked and groaned. The windows were painted shut long ago; meaning there was no fresh air in the room. The carpet was old and dirty. There was even carpeting in the bathroom which was constantly damp. There was evidence of mildew. The wallpaper was peeling. Staying there for three nights, along with seven other golfing buddies, was trying at best. Reports from my friends indicated their rooms were no better or little better than mine. The dining room food was fair.

Went for Sunday lunch on the back of some good recommendations. Asked for a table in the restaurant when I phoned. We were put into a side room with about as much ambience as a bad dentists waiting room. Table next to us had a dirty discloth lying on it. Nobody was forthcoming with a wine list, when requested I was looked at as if I had two heads. the only decent wine on offer was a so called bin end at £25 per bottle.

"Hand dived scallops" were presented in a small soup bowl, 3 very small overcooked browny white blobs swimming in cold vinegar and dried mixed herbs. The Cullen Skink was also cold.

Main course was Roast rib of Beef. Extremely small portions presented very unimaginatively with carrot, swede and potatoes (no greenery in sight), and a shrivelled yorkshire pud.

The sweet was a little better but by then the damage was done. To round off the afternoon I got overcharged by the receptionist who was more interested in talking to her relief about a £12 discrepency with Friday's petty cash, in full earshot of the customers, very professional indeed...not.

All in all a disasterous afternoon, will not be back.

“Waste of money”

My husband and I attended a wedding here. We were really disapointed with the rooms. Our room was cold and the bedding had holes in it. There were bugs in the bathroom and even if I could have braved the bugs the bath had rust all over. We paid 65 pounds for the night and I would have rather pitched a tent in the garden.

“very disappointing weekend”

We chose this hotel because it advertising that it is 3* standard with both the AA & the Scottish Tourist Board & because of its advertised location"overlooking the Ythan Estuary".
Our bedrooms were,on booking, promissed to have a lovely view of the river. In fact this view was over the hotel ancilliary buildings & car park, with a glimpse of the river from one of the rooms on the top floor.
The double room was far too small for double occupancy & had only one chair,so I presume it is usually uses as a single occupancy room. The bathroom did not have even one shelf for toiletries or make-up.
The shower in the second room was complete with mould all around the silicone seal & the tile grout.
The windows in the third bedroom were filthy.
Carpets in all 3 rooms were worn, dirty & stained & long past the time when they should have been replaced in any 3* establishment.
The use of the guests lounge was denied to us on the night of arrival because of a private party using the room for pre-Dinner drinks. Also, our pre-booked table for Dinner in the main restaurant was cancelled & we were put in the so-called parlour room for Dinner.
I could also make comments about the food, but that is a matter of taste,so will refrain from so doing.
Altogether a very disappointing experience.

“Great Place to Base a Golf Vacation”

Udny Arms Hotel

I have stayed at the Udny Arms on several occasions. It is clean, neat and has a wonderful dining room along with a friendly pub. Rooms are not big but comfortable. The location is very good. From this hotel, lots of famous and not so famous golf courses can be accessed. To name three, Cruden Bay, Mercar and Royal Aberdeen are quite close. This is also a golf course across the street that is fun. The proprietor was willing to help with golf and fishing accomadations when I was there.

Question: Does anyone know how to get in touch with hunting and fishing outfitter in the Aberdeen area?
