I realised that I had had no confirmation email so rang Moorfield House Hotel prior to our stay there. Iain Hair (owner) said I had booked through a third party (TripAdvisor) and, therefore, would have not got any email from him. He checked his system and sure enough the booking was there. He seemed surprised that I thought I should have had confirmation, adding had I rung or emailed him I would have done so.
Moorfield was clean but that is all I can say really. The toilet cubicle in Balmoral Castle Ladies was almost as big as the Moorfield bathroom which smelled of drainage back-flow and had little to no ventilation. No individual soaps - Courtesy (trade name) bottles in the shower (the perfume was OK) and a Tesco handwash at the basin. The towels were SMALL - I could not even get the smaller one to go round my head.
There was no wardrobe - just a contraption at right angles to a wall. This held five hangers. Thanfully we were only staying for the one night. I would not have liked to endure this arrangement for longer.
There was no TV or radio in the room, there was a clock but it had no battery. There were tea/coffee/kettle facilities but no biscuits Trying to fill the kettle was tricky because of the angle of the tap at the basin - the water went out as fast as it went in.
The room was far too hot and the only way of ventilating it was to open the window. OK at this time of year (early May) but not so when the midges are around.
Breakfast - cereals in plastic containers, tinned grapefruit and prunes, yoghurts and a banana on the general table. Jug of orange juice on our table. Tea or coffee on offer. Cooked breakast - bacon, sausage, black pudding, potato scones and eggs - poached, fried or scrambled. This was cooked well but such small portions. Only brown toast supplied - one slice of bread each with cartons of marmalade only - no jam.
Not to be recommended.
When we got home there was an email from Mr Hair - see below, I await a further response. Please note we had paid in full prior to our visit.
"Dear Mrs Gordon,
I tried to contact you using the phone number given in your booking however it was an incorrect number. Unfortunately you decided not to check out with me and left the hotel with our room keys !! Technically you have therefore not checked out and are libel for further room charges until the keys are returned.(as per the check-in form you signed)
Please return the keys immediately by courier or first class post.
"The keys were left on the front desk as you were nowhere to be seen. Please confirm you have now found these!"
"No keys found ! clearly you did not look very far as I was in the kitchen ! "
"Clearly you have not looked very far as the keys were left on your front desk - I have a witness to prove this. A laundry van pulled up alongsde us in the car par park as we were leaving - as we could not find you, we assumed you were busy sorting out the laundry.
If you insist, you may bill me for replacement keys but I would prefer you to have a thorough look at your desk area before you do this.
Please respond soonest."
I have had no response from Moorfield House Hotel and can only assume the keys have been found. The owner of the hotel is not suited to this sort of work.
