We stayed at Ullinish for the weekend for a special family celebration. We know the Isle of Skye very well and arrived with excited anticipation at the prospect of Ullinish after the good reviews on Tripadvisor. The location is magical and the accommodation is very clean and comfortable. We were however, a little surprised at the cool welcome from the proprietor who found it difficult to manage a smile. More energy went into explaining the limitations of the bathroom facilities, which demanded limited movement in the roll top baths to avoid flooding downstairs?!! We had dinner at Ullinish on our first night and whilst the chef obviously goes to great lengths to be experimental and innovative, we were disappointed not see more local produce and traditional scottish fare. The smoked salmon soup was delicious but the sweetcorn icecream requried a particular palette...and there was a total lack of vegetables. We chose, after our first night, to dine at the Three Chimneys, and would disagree with an earlier review making any comparison. Our meal at the Three Chimneys was superlative beyond description and would highly recommend.
After an evening and a morning without hot water, an apology either at the time or on departure would have been welcomed.
The proprietors are making a great effort to promote Ullinish, however, if you're looking for a taste of Skye and a warm highland welcome you may be disappointed.
