“Slightly quirky but ok”

Flodigarry Country House Hotel

Oct 11, 2007

We stayed for 3 nights at the Flodigarry hotel on the "Autumn Gold" tariff. It took just over an hour to get there from the Skye bridge. The hotel was beautifully positioned just past the turn off for the village, with a lovely view of Harris and the Torridon peaks.

As promised, we were upgraded on arrival as their was additional space in the hotel. The room was average size and clean. The decor was ageing, but very comfortable. The room had a separate bathroom and WC, but the shower was not very good.

The food was good. None of the meals were exceptional, but they were all fine. One of the nights we visited the three chimneys restaurant for dinner, this was more expensive, but the food was exceptional.

The staff were attentive, although the hotel seemed to keep only two on duty at a time. To get attention you had to ring a bell. The staff went off duty fairly promptly at 10:30 and asked whoever was left up to turn off the lights etc, which seemed slightly odd.

Overall I had a good stay and felt that I received the level of service I had paid for. At standard rates, I think I would have been slightly disappointed.

After reading the previous reviews of this hotel, I was quite nervous about booking into it. I only did because I planned my trip to Skye at the last minute, and the half-dozen places I would have preferred to stay in were all booked. As it turns out, this was quite fortunate. I absolutely loved my time at the hotel. It isn't perfect, and perhaps it is a bit expensive, but it really is so restful and welcoming. I stayed in a room called 'Ranald' in the cottage. It was quaint and cozy - no tv, but I found that actually I never missed it. The main hotel has a beautiful guests' lounge with an open fire and comfy couches, where the staff were happy to bring me a glass of wine while I read my book. I ate in the Bistro, where the portions were generous and very tasty. Breakfasts were also very good. The setting of the hotel is just gorgeous, overlooking the coast with a backdrop of craggy hills. I would go back to it in a second (after saving up some cash!).

Two nights in this hotel was not really enough to explore the beauty of the north of this island, but the hotel was certainly a match for the lovely surroundings.

Firstly, our room. This was not one of their special rooms, but seemed to be the next best thing, with a large en suite (with the deepest bath I have seen in years), a comfortable sitting area and a wonderful sleigh style bed. The view of the Quairaing was also a delight from our window.

There is an astonishing drawing room downstairs with an open fire, with large sofas and daily newspapers so that you can catch up on the world that is busy elsewhere.

The only thing that perhaps lets this place down is the "Bistro". If you don't want to eat from the set menu in their restaurant, you are banished to the Bistro which is a pretty unfriendly green room that appears to be full of garden furniture. Whilst there, you are treated to a spectacular view and tasty food, but the decor itself could be improved.

The staff are almost all foreigners, but the standard of English is very good indeed, and you can't fault their enthusiasm.

I would definitely stay here again.

“Our romantic Honeymoon”

My husband and I stayed at Flodigarry early October 2003 and we thought our stay was amazing! As we were on our Honeymoon anything less than satisfactory would have been noted and the management made aware. I am really surprised to read the recent comments as our experience could not have been more different. I understand that the Hotel has changed hands since our visit but as we are booked to go again this year for our 4th Anniversary I'm worried.
