This is a hotel struggling to stay on its feet, clearly once upon a time it was THE place to stay on Skye and it has that aurora of faded glamour which in some ways gives it a little appeal. Our room was a modern one with a nice view over a rear car park towards the Cuilins but it was very basic. The newly installed double-glazing windows had been botched so they didn't close properly, as a result we had a whistling wind blowing through our bedroom throughout our stay.
The rest of the hotel clearly hadn't seen a lick of paint for decades. To reach our hotel we had to go through The Shining-esque dark, winding corridors. I almost expected Jack Nicholson to jump out at me with an axe. A clever spark had also decided to situate the public phone right outside our room so we had the joys of Americans phoning home late at night.
Breakfast was a sorry affair, in general service wasn't as bad as what others have described. Indifferent is a better description. The bar next door had a good atmosphere, although perhaps it would be better in summer when the campsite was full. Like many other places in the Highlands nowadays this place suffers from E European agency staff syndrome - their English isn't good, they don't smile a lot, they know nothing about whiskey, but hey, they're cheap.
Then again I've been in worse and the location of this place is great (which saves it from being 2/5 in this review), right next door to the Cuilins. But for the price you can do a lot better elsewhere on the island.
