Having read of the recent award for quality meals at the Toravaig House Hotel, I booked dinner for my wife and me on the night of 10 November 2009. After driving 42 miles from my home, I was staggered to find the hotel locked up and in darkness. I then went to the nearby Duisdale Country House Hotel which I know to be jointly owned with Toravaig and there spoke to one of the owners. I learned that the chef was off work ill and that no meals were available at Toravaig - however, the dining room at Duisdale was open and this should have been explained to me at the time of booking. We had been looking forward to a meal at Toravaig and did not wish to eat at Duisdale. Sadly, the attitude of the owner was unapologetic and I feel that she handled the situation in a very offhand manner. I strongly advise anyone wishing to dine at Toravaig House Hotel to check and get an assurance that the meal will be provided there.

Management response from littlepix_8, Owners
(Management representative)
Nov 20, 2009
Thank you for passing your comments onto Tripadvisor for us to review. As we have said many times we appreciate all comments, even when bad in order to improve the service which we offer our guests. With regards to the dinner reservation at Toravaig House, our chef had just been taken seriously ill and was awaiting surgery. It was impossible to get an agency chef to cover, particularly at short notice, and deliver to the standard which we would expect our diners to find in our restaurant. As explained to you, this occurrence was completely unforeseen and upsetting. Our telephones were diverted to our sister hotel, Duisdale House, just over two miles away, where the reservation was made and where a table was reserved and dinner had been prepared for you by our talented Michelin star chef.
We are sorry if there was a misunderstanding on either part at the time of booking but our Manager David offered drinks, menus and our sincere apologies but you chose to decline any offer.

We were of course delighted to see you, but were taken aback by your reaction. Such situations in life are unforeseen and cannot be forecast unfortunately. It gives us great pleasure to welcome and look after all our guests for all over the world at both hotels and each and every one are very special to us.

Very professional from reservation to departure. Pleasant spacious room with views (though skimped on wardrobe space) and very comfortable lounge area, with open fire.
Restaurant was quite superb - though a minor glitsch on wine service meant a less-than-perfect score. You can get here by bus (will stop at the door) which is a bonus.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay here, and very much enjoyed it although the room was definitely on the small side and lacked storage - a wardrobe that just about fitted 3 hangers and 2 of the smallest drawers I have ever seen. We stayed in Colonsay, which had a lovely bay window, half of the view was beautiful, overlooking the water, half was over the next house. The staff were usually very helpfull.
For us the best part of the stay here was the food, very fresh, light, seasonal and tasty, excellent! Breakfast was very good too with interesting choices. I recommend the porridge with a 'wee dram', a very good way to start the day!
We thought overall the room rate was expensive although the food was reasonable, for us that balanced out. We probably would not stay here again, although would definitely return to the restaurant.

Hey all you tourists, stop obsessing over room sizes in hotels. This hotel has charm and is quite unique. Stayed in a room with a view towards the sound of sleat. The standard of decor and fittings was high and the interior design spot on. This to me is more important than how big the room is. The lounge was classy and the choice of drinks from the bar extensive. The food was well prepared and presented from a reassuringly short menu and wines well priced. HIghlights were the pea pannacotta and the celeriac soup. Portion size was just about right and who doesn't like an ice cream cone with their dessert?

Would I recommend Toravaig to my friends? Yes. Would I go back? Yes.

Enough said. If however you want to stay in a big room with two double beds find the nearest travel lodge and try and tell your friends how good it is.
