“Enchanting, charming hotel by the sea”

We got married at Hotel Eilean Iarmain in May 2008. We found the hotel to be charming with an old fashioned feel, without it feeling dated. The hotel overlooks a tiny pier where fishing boats visited. The views over the water were of mountains on the mainland, which changed colour with the weather.

The hotel has accommodation in three buildings, the main hotel, a lovely cottage by the sea shore and suites in a converted stables.

Attached to the hotel is the Bar Praban used by hotel guests and locals alike which serves fantastic bar meals and really good beer. An impromptue band began playing whilst we were there and various gaelic singers accompanied them making the visit to the bar even more enjoyable.

The hotel also does an a la carte menu, which is a little pricey, but delicious all the same.

The staff couldn't have been friendlier and more helpful during our stay. We found the whole hotel experience to be perfection and we certainly will be back.

“Food was good”

Hotel Eilean Iarmain

Mar 22, 2008

Though the trip took place in 2006 I have finally decided to write a review of this hotel. We were a group from switzerland and booked our rooms well in advance.
The rooms were good except that the one I shared with another group member (not in the main building) had a bathroom which was not well ventilated, and the adjoining bedroom was affected with smells and what have you from the bathroom.
The greatest disappointment was the welcome on our second evening after a day of touring the island. The website promises a cosy fireplace and time to relax in front of it before dinner. The first evening we were able to do that - (along with other guests, who were probably preferred ones), but on the second day we were the only ones and the waiter/s there were cold and abrupt.

One woman, serving in the restaurant was rude even on our first day. When one of us praised a certain dish and wondered if a certain ingredient was there , the waitress answered rudely and abruptly - that the cook knows! He will be in, in the morning!

It is quite än expensive place, and then to be treated like this was terrible.

I think the owner is not present at the property and thus has no knowledge.
We went to Poolewe after here and stayed at Poolewe Hotel The owners were friendly and extremely hospitable. What a difference. The food was better at Eilean Iarmain though.

“Lovely Location”

This hotel is in a perfect setting. Right on a loch side over looking a lighthouse. It is positioned near a Whiskey shop, local craft shop and bar attached to the hotel.

When we arrived at the hotel, we found no reception. We had to go and bang on the managers door to get checked in.

The room was of a good size, in a chinzy style. We had a couple of problems in our room, the TV not working for example with no remote to attempt to re-tune.

Breakfast was good with a nice selection.

Dinner was another matter. You have 2 choices of places to eat, a bar or a resturant. The bar is shabby and when we were there it was so busy people were having to eat, then vacate thier table for the next people. We asked for a menu and was told that they were in a folder at the end of the bar and to help ourselves. The wine list was no different to the resturant and was expensive and too vast for a bar.

The resturant was over the top with an 'interesting' menu including a vegatable Terrine with a Chardonay Jelly ! You could not eat the bar menu in the resturant, so we ended up visiting another local hotel on the second night as we didn't fancy either options. The hotel is really missing a trick here.

“Not a Great Experience”

This was a very expensive overnight stay for our group by the standards of the other hotels that we chose on our tour - even after doubling up on rooms to restrict costs. Overall we were very disappointed with the standard of service. The hotel itself is in an extremely scenic location but that's about where it ends. The room that we stayed in was very average for the money and had a pink bath but no shower! The bar at the side of the hotel appeared to be operating a two tier pricing system..........one for the locals and one for outsiders.........and was out of local beer! The evening meal was ok but the staff appeared to just off a Youth Opportunities programme. Breakfast was a complete shambles; we waited for over an hour and the little boy opposite me ended up with a hard boiled egg to dip his soldiers into. Pathetic!!! Staff appeared humourless and still suffering from the after effects of the Battle of Culloden. Avoid.

“Not for Us”

Hotel Eilean Iarmain

We stayed here recently, and it was one of the few hotels/b and b's that we would not recommend on our trip. We only booked the hotel/b&b, not the dinner option. Although this hotel is located in a beautiful location and our room had great views, the hotel is very creaky and light sleepers will probably have trouble here. I woke up several times to hear doors knocking, shuters, etc. and at one point I actually thought someone was trying to get into our room because the door was moving back and forth (no one was at the door, or trying to break in). The bed was large, and very hard, but actually not too uncomfortable.

Our experience might have been different had we felt welcome in general. When we arrived, we went to the bar area which is attached to the hotel and we were glared at by locals who were having after work drinks. Later in the evening we came back, hoping to meet other tourists or locals, but again, we were just greeted by silent locals who did not make us feel welcome.

Given the price of this hotel, we would not recommend it. If the price was halved, then I proabably would, as that is the price I would expect to pay for a hotel /B&B of this quality.
