“We'll be back!”

Urquhart Caledonian Hotel

Arrived in Portree late on a Saturday afternoon - like other reviewers tried elsewhere and eventually found the Caledonian. From the outside, it really didn't look anything great. How wrong could we be? What a find! Room was very clean and comfortable - furnishings are relatively new as is the decor. Staff are very helpful and polite and genuinely endeavour to make sure you enjoy your stay. The entertainment in the bar was great (very popular with the locals) - best night we've had in a long time! Really good value - £70 for bed and full cooked breakfast with toast and orange juice. Will definitely be back again soon - next time for longer.

“So helpful and friendly”

Tried more expensive hotels but no vacancies so settled for the Urquhart Caledonian. First impression from outside was slightly worrying but once inside could not have been happier with choice. Full marks for everything. I could not recommend it highly enough. Food, rooms, cleanliness, helpful, friendly staff and situation, all top marks. We will definitely be back.

“We loved our stay here!”

Urquhart Caledonian Hotel

Jul 5, 2007

I have NO IDEA what was going on with that last reviewer. We had a lovely stay June 23-25. It was one of our favorite hotels of the entire trip. The service was warm and friendly; and the room was very comfortable and roomy with a nice view. The location was ideal. I would stay here again in a heartbeat! (And we enjoyed the breakfasts very much.) Another nice touch was the tea service and cookies left in the room each day. We so enjoyed spreading out in that room and looking out at the water. We spent more time in the room than we normally would have because it was so pleasant.

We did not enjoy our stay here at all and found it to be the worst accommodation of our trip around Scotland. The room and bathroom was really small for the price we paid. The carpets and furniture were very worn and old. The only good thing about the stay was that the shower was good. We booked a room with a view but actually overlooked the car park at the back of the hotel where neighbours were having a braai (barbeque). The bed was terrible and very hard and uncomfortable. Everytime one of us moved it squeaked. The bar downstaris was also really noisy. I ended up having to take a sleeping tablet to get a good night's sleep. The breakfast was also the worst we had in Scotland. They had very little variety (there was no brown toast, no yoghurt to have with cereal and no herbal teas). We will definitely not be returning to this hotel.

“noise spoiled stay”

Urquhart Caledonian Hotel

The Caledonian has a good location - middle of Portree. Rooms were fine, breakfast wasn't the best (very greasy!) and like everywhere in Scotland you have to be up with the birds for it (only served to 9am). I didn't bother the 2nd morning! The only other thing was the noise, theres a lively bar and it went on until after midnight.
Probably a great place if you want to go on the beer, but I wanted to get some sleep!
