Pre booked a double and reiterated this on arrival, got a twin. And it was absolutely tiny - there was barely enough space to walk round the edges of the bed. Furniture was old and tatty. Beds were small - my feet were hanging off the end.

The room was facing the front, and the noise from the local youngsters hanging around in the square and the bus shelter was unbearable and went through til about 3am. This may have been because it was an exceptional Friday night - Franz Ferdinand had played a gig in the community centre - but I've spoken to other visitors who say it is a regular occurance.

I thought I was booking something a bit special for the £93 I was charged - I'm sure we would have got far nicer accommodation at a better price elsewhere. Probably one to avoid. Good location, not a lot else going for it.

If they booked a double directly with us then I can only apologise if they received a twin. We do accept bookings through a tour group who, no matter what their customers specify, always ask us to provide a twin room. Unfortunately as he did not put the room number down I have no idea if this was the case. Franz Ferdinand did play that night and the square was very busy, it is not normally this busy on a late september night. I would also add that we are next to the police station in the square, the noise could not have been that bad otherwise they would have investigated. All our rooms were refurbished a couple of years ago and we are in the process of refurbishing them again. All our furtniutre is less than 4 years old and all the beds are standard size, we have no extra small beds , so I can only presume that this gentleman was exceptionally tall. I am very interested to learn that he paid £93, is he sure he stayed with us? ?? Our tariff for that night was £35 per person, per night for bed & breakfast, and no-one paid more than that, I have checked all the bills and the diary. Again I can only presume that they booked through a tour company, they pay them and we just get the set rate agreed. Most of the people staying at the Hotel were attending the concert and informed us that they had had a great stay.

“beware of overbooking!”

Beware of deliberate overbooking by the management of the Portree Hotel to the Isles Inn, a few yards further down the same Somerled Square. Both places have the same owner, and the accomodation in the Isles Inn is bad and unhygienic. Staff is unfriendly and cold. This place and the Portree's Hotel management can ruin your holidays in Scotland!

These people were booked out not because we had overbooked but because their tour group had over booked. They were not happy about it and never stopped complaining even though we advised them time and time again it was not our fault, and tried to help them as much as possible. We did not book them to another hotel their tour group did. They also asked for their money back which we were unable to do as we are not paid the £30 per person for them until well after they leave.

We just made a one night stop in Portree on our way to The Western Isles. We did not have any accommodation booked so we therefore went on the hunt for a Hotel Room. The Portree Hotel looked attractive enough from the outside so we thought "this one will do". We entered via the reception door to find a receptionist doing her nails......obviously very busy....not.
We enquired about availability of room and price. Before going ahead for check in, we decided to have a meal and we were directed to the restaurant by the receptionist. We stood at the restaurant door for 5 mins until I decided to approach the waiter (the only one it seem). I asked if we could have dinner for 2 and I was greated with a "I am too busy"........."I can't help You" and proceeded to walk away. We thought the message was clear enough. We therefore made our way back to the reception area where we found the receptionist once again doing her nails. She looked at us not with the silghtest concern to see us back. We therefore decided to walk out with no room and no dinner. It was just appalling!!!!!

Firstly i should state that i did not stay in the portree hotel but did use it for a meal on 21/06/06.

Myself and a companion entered the hotel and were shown to a table---there were about 10-12 people eating there at the time.

We both ordered cheesey garlic bread as a starter----and i have to say that there was plenty cheese--but as for garlic----that was not so easy to find--certainly not in the taste.

For main course i ordered a cosmos pizza, and i have to say it looked and smelled wonderful------but the taste was not so good---actually very bland
My companion ordered scampi----which turned up with a side salad and veg-----we had to ask for the chips which should have gone with it-----they immediately arrived, so had obviously been left sitting on the counter.

We finished off out meal with coffee----which was fine-----though i have to question the style of cups used[reminded me of cups you find in hotel bathrooms]

Before leaving i visited their bathrooms---i was told there were none downstairs so went upstairs[it would appear they are open for business but renovations are not complete]
To get into the bathroom i had to step over a number of bags and cases which had been left right outside the bathroom door-------i would suggest that is at the least inconvenient---and possibly breaking both fire and health and safety regulations.

My general summing up of my visit to the Portree Hotel is that the food was ok----but the service i would describe as very poor----and maybe it is time for them to step up a gear, now we are heading into the busy summer season
