I have visited Viewfield House twice. I regret it is not more, but I am certain on our next trip to Scotland it will be on our itinerary. Our first trip showed up our shortcomings on estimating driving time in Scotland. We caught the last ferry and arrived at Viewfield House at 1:00 am. Mr. Macdonald was up to greet us. I am in the hospitality business and new this inexcusably late arrival was a real imposition on a family business, but Mr. Macdonald would hear nothing of our apologies, and concerned himself about our comfort.
During this first trip we stayed in the large airy room above the parlor with twin beds. At that time the bathroom was across the hall and we admit to having fun using the thunder bucket toilet. The second trip in the same large room, an in-suite bathroom was attached. It was much more comfortable with a large clawfoot tub, but we had to go check out the thunder bucket toilet! Breakfast was delightful and the conversation was subdued but interesting. It was the first time we tried black pudding! My wife and I are not all that out-going, and we found the low-key polite atmosphere to our liking. Our first trip was for only one night. We tried to cram too much into our vacation. Our second trip was for two nights and we left wishing we had worked a longer stay on the island.
During our second stay we limped our rental car back to the Inn after damaging a tire on a Skye backroad. Asking about how we could get it repaired, the Macdonalds referred a service that had it repaired and remounted before we could even give it serious thought. Our second night was capped off by a memorable dinner.
Why would we consider staying anywhere else when visiting Skye? Our only regret is that the trips cannot be more frequent.
