This is the second of six reviews covering our 2007 tour of Scotland.
Our tour takes us from our home in Hampshire up the West coast of Scotland and over to Orkney back over to Scotland and down the East coast to Aberdeen then home via York.
The Cuillin Hills was the 2nd hotel of our marathon tour; we arrived early evening after a long drive and ferry journey for a two night stay on the misty isle.
On arrival in Portree we had a lot of trouble actually finding the hotel, be warned it is very poorly signposted it took us about 15 mins of going round in circles to find the actual entrance road to the hotel. On mentioning this to the porter who took our bags to the room he said that it was a common observation and there should be at least 2 more direction signs…. Hmmmm…
We were promptly and efficiently dealt with at reception and shown to our ‘Executive’ room. It was very comfortable and pleasant but a little cramped, mainly due to the fact that it had a single bed and a double bed even though I had booked a double room, still it was somewhere to park the suitcases!
Many people on this site refer to the large rooms at the Cuillin Hills hotel, well ours was certainly not. And neither was the bathroom. It was adequate and nothing better. It was one of those hotel rooms that there was little wrong with but nothing to rave about either. Clean, tidy, functional and modern.
The furniture was cheap & cheerful and did the job. The two small chairs were comfortable enough. Reasonably modern small television, adequate tea & coffee tray.
Pleasant toiletries in the bathroom, decent towels, no face cloths, no bathrobes.
And now the view…. Well the view… lets remember this is Scotland a fantastic view around every bend in the road. The view from the Cuillin Hotel bedrooms was of Portree bay with the hills in the distance. Very nice but hardly worth the ecstatic comments in some of these reviews. I have posted pictures of the (executive!) room and of the view from the window. Judge for yourself. It was nice but remember it was also £300 a night….
Thoughts turn to the restaurant. We dined here on both nights and enjoyed both meals.
It’s just that it was now 10 days ago and I cannot remember what we had or anything much about it.
As others have said, on both mornings there was a decorator painting the entrance hall with wet paint signs, masking tape & dust sheets everywhere. It was somewhat surprising that this work was being done at the end of June in a tourist hotel.
Would I return? Probably not but then I would not try and put anyone off staying here either.. It was Ok – but quite expensive.
