“Simply the Best!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

Having stayed at Rowan Tree Cottage for a couple of nights on our recent Highlands holiday we can only echo the justly deserved praise of the other reviewers. Rowan Tree Cottage is a stunning B&B nestled in a quiet area only a few minutes from Portree. We arrived to a warm welcome from Alan who has thought of absolutely everything to ensure a visit here is perfect. The room itself is amazing. Beautifully decorated to create a relaxing environment, with photographs of local views, a silent fridge (with complimentary bubbly!) and fluffy bathrobes. The bathroom is similarly well appointed with a large shower and separate bath. Alan has created a B&B born out of his own experiences of staying in B&B's where everything is thought of, from fresh milk in the silent fridge, a spreadsheet guide to local attractions with priorities of things to see, to a pair of binoculars for enjoying the views over the Braes from your bedroom window.
Breakfast is a particular treat enjoyed in front of the big window providing views over the stunning countryside (although the October weather hindered this a little for us) and as there is only 1 bedroom here you have peace and quiet to enjoy it.
I could go on and on about our experience at Rowan Tree Cottage but all you need to do is look at other reviews to understand how good this place is. It won't be long before Alan sits atop the Tripadvisor tree as without doubt this is the best B&B on Skye.

Our stay at Rowan Tree Cottage was perfect in every way. The location was perfect, only minutes drive from Portree, with its pretty harbour and wonderful restaurants, yet tucked away in a quiet tranquil little area, The Braes, where you can explore a local secluded beach and enjoy scenic walks off the usual tourist trail. With Alan's informative directions, which he kindly emailed us in advance of our arrival, Rowan Tree Cottage was easy to find. We arrived to a warm welcome from Alan who was waiting to meet us in the beautiful garden just before sunset. The bedroom was also perfect, comfy bed, beautifully decorated, with everything you could possibly need provided and more; fluffy white bathrobes & towels, complimentary bottle of bubbly and a fine selection of refreshments (including my favourite San Pellegrino Limonata) chilled in the (silent) room fridge, not to mention fresh milk in case you fancy a nice cup of tea to go with the tasty box of butter rich shortbread! The bathroom was luxurious and pristine, with spacious power shower and separate bathtub. I especially loved the little Isle of Skye handmade soaps that were provided as a little treat for guests. The highlight for us both was breakfast, served in a beautiful room with a large picture window offering gorgeous views of the surrounding hills, coastline, and Raasay Island beyond. Nice little touches such as a little book of Scottish birds and binoculars were on the window ledge so you can enjoy seeing the local wildlife as you breakfast. We were thrilled to see a couple of Sea Eagles fly in the distance. The cooked breakfasts were delicious and there was so much choice, we were able to choose something different each day from personalised little menus. Freshly baked homemade bread, a huge selection of homemade preserves (my favourite being the blackberry and pear), freshly prepared fruit platter, freshly squeezed orange juice, all served on beautiful crockery and with proper napkins too. Alan had even taken the trouble to finely carve away the stalky bits off each of the individual little tomatoes in the cooked breakfasts! The great thing about Rowan Tree Cottage is that you have the place to yourselves with no other guests staying, you really feel relaxed. Alan made us feel at home by giving us plenty of space, but he was always there when needed. We enjoyed our little chats with Alan after breakfast, he's really knowledgeable and gave great recommendations on places to visit and restaurants to try, kindly letting us borrow his maps and books. We've had a wonderful, memorable, visit to Skye, our stay at Rowan Tree Cottage made it even more perfect. We would love to return again some time!

My only regret about staying at Rowan Tree is that I didn't stay longer. It is hard to know where to start. My wife and I stayed with Alan for two nights and he truly thought of everything. The bed was big and comfy, there were big fluffy bathrobes waiting for our use and a bottle of champagne in the (silent!) fridge! The bathroom has both a wonderful shower and big soaker tub, and he had local soaps you could take home (plus a basket full of all the things you might have forgotten). And oh my god the breakfast! You get a menu the night before with a variety of cooked foods to choose from, and everything we had was amazingly tasty. He even baked fresh bread and had homemade jams! Definitely try the lemon curd...it is like having lemon merange pie on your toast! And the view is simply breathtaking. Once you are ready to go explore, Alan gives you a spreadsheet of all the sites, complete with times to experience them, and maps to get you there. Seriously...he doesn't miss a single detail! This B&B should be number one in Portree, and if we return to Skye, we will say here again.

Much has been commented about the Rowan Tree Cottage (with currently 17 exceptionell ratings) so there is very little to add to this gem that separates itself to many other B&Bs you may have been to in the past. However it's worth to mention that this B&B, run by Alan, has to be considered of the finest accommodations you can find in the northwest of Scotland. Alan, a man of perfection, will make your stay a time to remember. (Trust me, as my wife had tears in her eyes when we drove out of Rowan Tree on our last day..) Alan keep up the excellent service - we love to come back soon.

Rowan Tree Cottage is an amazing B&B & quite simply as good as it gets.
The location, accomodation & the hospitality were outstanding!
From Alan's warm welcome to his fabulous breakfasts, everything was just perfect.
An amazing bathroom with both power shower & bath, a lovely room with a super comfy bed, fluffy bath robes & silent fridge (with complimentry cava & beer!), breakfast cooked to perfection with homemade bread & preserves (the best lemon curd I have tasted!).....All fabulous!
If you are planning a trip to Skye, then Rowan Tree is the place to stay.
We can't wait to return!

This is definitely the best B&B we have ever stayed in. Every detail was though of, every need catered for (right down to a little plastic bag in the bathroom so you could take home the local soap provided should you wish). Alan welcomed us in the beautiful garden and made us feel at home straight away.

The room was so comfortable, and had tea and coffee making facilities (with fresh milk in the fridge!) as well as lemonade, beer and cava, and lovely biscuits. There was a tray, cutlery and crockery should you wish to snack in the room. The TV had free sat. The bed was huge, very comfortable, and Alan was prepared for all weathers with two duvet tog options and a beautiful quilt.

The bathroom was very clean and had everything you could need, including toiletries you may have forgotten. The fluffy bath robes were a nice touch.

Breakfast was amazing. Alan was very eager to ensure that you got exactly what you wanted from his large selection, and if he didn't have it, he would make sure that he could get it for you if requested in time. Very friendly but Alan also respected that we would probably like to chat ourselves over breakfast so left us to it after serving us. The view was stunning from the window and the birds visiting the garden were very interesting to watch.

He went out of his way to make sure that we were happy, and that we had the information we required to enjoy our couple of days on the island. He gave us a map, cards and a spreadsheet of what there was too see, what weather we required, and what priority we should make each activity.

A lovely host and a beautiful place to stay. I will be recommending this B&B to everyone I know and encouraging as many people as possible to experience this welcome.

Every part of our stay at the Rowan Tree Cottage was excellent, from the booking process to the easy-to-follow directions to the house, to the superb bedroom and bathroom, and the marvelous breakfasts. Alan is a born host who cares about making a trip to Skye memorable, relaxing and fun. This cottage is perfectly located about 5 miles from the main town of Portree, and has sweeping views of the beautiful countryside and the water beyond. It is easy to get into Portree or many nearby locations, and coming back each evening feels like a homecoming. We can't wait to go back.
