We just returned from 2 weeks in Scotland, and 2 of those nights were at the MacKinnon Country House Hotel. The location is convenient, it's just across the bridge when you first drive over to Skye. We stayed at this place because we needed an additional single room and this inn offered that, many do not.
The first thing that bothered me wias the cigarette butts floating in a can of water right next to the entrance. Smokers need to do so outside, but that can should be A) cleaned daily and B) replaced with a less unsightly option.
We found the owners of the inn to be not particularly sociable, odd given their career choice. They are busy running things in the background and appear to be "put-upon" if they need to come to the lobby to answer a question. Rooms were adequate, ours decorated in a tartan theme. Our room was stuffy, so we slept with the window open, and it was noisy because of the cars and trucks in and out of the driveway, starting at 6am. Try to get a room in the back of the inn. Based on the comments listed here about the food, we chose to eat elsewhere. Breakfasts were not enjoyable for me, as I do not like the Scottish bacon or sausage. I had corn flakes, sorry no bananas.
I would highly recommend 2 restaurants in the area. The first is called Creelers, in Broadford. It's a 5 minute drive from MacKinnon's, reservations necessary but you can probably get them the same day. Don't be put off by the outside appearance, which looks like a fishmongers. Seafood was fresh and delicious, nicely presented with fresh veggies and salads. Very friendly and professional waitstaff. Prices about 12-18GBP for entrees. The second restaurant was in Plockton, an adorable little town on the mainland, just a few miles from the bridge. It was called Off the Rails, situated in a railroad station. Food here was more ambitious, and reflected in prices. Reservations necessary.

We are so sorry to hear that this couple were not entirely happy with our hotel.
The reference to a lack of hospitality is very challenging to us. Normally in every indepdent survey e.g, Who Cares Wins etc we score well above average. Hospitiality is normally seen as one of our strengths. It may well be that we were busy with one or more of our other 30 guests and failed to show an adequate levle of personal attention. If this is the case then we offer our most sincere apologies.
I am pleased that the guests found the room to be adequate. I must confess that the provision of 100% cotton bathrobes to each guests and hi quality toileties would in themselves warrant a response more then adequate.
It is true that this summer was particularly warm and sunny. It is also true that we do not have air condiditoning (maybe global warming may encourage all of us on Skye to install A.C). One way to cool the room down is to open the window or read the guest folder placed in every room which offers all guests the use of oscelating fans free of charge.
The road on which we are situated is not a through road and as such does not attract much traffic. It is true though that other guests do use the the car park for their cars too!
I do have to admit that we do offer Scottish bacon for breakfast (actually we offer Ayrshire air dried bacon-known tobe the best there is) and I also have to admit that we do not offer bananas for breakfast nor do we offer paw paws, yams, pinapples or lychees in syrup. I too would recommend Creelers in Broadford and the place in Plockton. It is just a shame that the guests offer these recommednations without trying our food at dinner.
Lastly we are also guilty of offering home-made jam and homemade marmalde for breakfast as well as award winning sausages, free range eggs, local tomatoes and butter in a dish not a plastic packet. If offering quality is a crime then we admit our guilt.
