“Not bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

We stayed at MacKinnon for two nights in early September. The location was pretty good and the staff was friendly. I'd consider it average and would agree with other posters that it needs updating. Someone used the word "tired" and that sums it up well. I'm generally used to a bit nicer of a place but we decided to go on the less expensive side since we would be spending most of our time exploring the island rather than sitting in the room.

The reviews already written concur with our own experience. The owner is a charming, approachable and helpful guy. We had a budget crisis and he provided a solution. The menus are imaginative and tasty. We too liked the idea of an honesty bar and of course we enjoyed the sample in the room (managed to make it last two days). Giving the rooms names gives them an extra something. One criticism we could make is that the bathroom areas need some improvement but as the current owners have not been there long, we should give them time to put this right. The location, very close to the bridge to the mainland, is convenient.

Room Tip: Except in summer, if you don't have a car, avoid the lodge.

The country house setting is lovely, and I'm sure that, in it's heyday, it was lovely. Once inside, the public areas are very comfortable. A log fire in one if the lounges was very nice. But being greeted by dog mess on the drive and the lawn wasn't a good start. The front of the house needs tidying up and it needs repainting. Being met by who turned out to be the owner in grubby chefs whites wasn't very professional. I had booked a single room with what was advertised as a 'private bathroom'. It wasn't private at all, and was away from my room and the other side of a fire door. Not good in the middle of the night. The other guests were able to use it, and I know for a fact one did as I could hear someone in there. The lady I spoke to, I think the owner's wife, was quite shirty when I queried what was to stop other guests using it, saying that they wouldn't use it as they all had en-suites. All it needs is a Yale lock fitting to it, and that would make it private. The breakfast was poor - one choice of cereal, (in our case it was soft cornflakes), the haggis I ordered with my scrambled egg never came, and a table of 5 nearby had to return their breakfast as 3 of their orders were wrong. Checkout was OK and the owner was very nice. The hotel could be so nice, but the owner needs to decide if he's a chef or a receptionist. A uniformed receptionist who greeted you with a smile on arrival would be so much more professional. I hate writing all this about this hotel, but this is an honest review and although the owner is very nice and it is his dream to run a hotel (as he told us the previous night), he needs to seriously consider a visit from the 'Hotel Inspector' for some ideas.

The welcome whisky and shortbread in the room was just the beginning. The host (Ian) was very friendly and made us feel at home. The honour bar was something else...help yourself and make a note of what you had to drink. The bed was a four poster and very comfortable. All the staff were great fun and were very professional when it came to table service. We were very impressed when our food was served. Gloves were donned by the staff (literally) and nothing was too much trouble to accommodate our selections. Breakfast was amazing. Forget the usual bacon and eggs - that was available if you wanted it but the smoked salmon, poached egg option was to die for. The hotel is conveniently located just over the Skye Bridge and a great place to start your Skye adventure. You wont be disappointed.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the Lodge. The Stewart room ensuite facility has been updated.W

Friendly greeting on arrival. We were not shown to our room just pointed in the direction, out of
the hotel & turn left no outdoor signs to the lodge. Our room was upstairs large, and clean, but
we soon realised that the downstairs firedoor closed rapidly behind people leaving or entering with a loud bang. There was no information about the hotel, its history, or meal times. Neither was there any tourist information leaflets that we could see. We did not eat evening meals at the hotel so we cannot comment on these, however the breakfast was not as advertised on their web site. There was 1 choice of cereal. No fruit at all. The cooked breakfast was served luke warm on all 4 mornings we were there, even after we complained and was told it was cooked fresh to order. We had far better value and an excellent hot breakfast in a small B & B
at Moffat on our way to Skye.

From the time we arrived till we left we were made to feel like we were family . The food from the dining room was very tasty and the staff were friendly . The room we had was furnished with Stewart Tartan from the linen to the drapes a special memory . The host could not do enough to make you feel at home from directions to the small things the wifi . We loved everything about this Boutique Hotel keep up the good work
