We stayed at the Greshornish Hotel with our 2 and 4 year old children at the end of May 2008 for one night. We found it in Alistair Sawday's "Special Places to Stay", which we had not used as reference book before.
The hotel is in a wonderfully secluded position, in lovely gardens.
Although quite a formal place, our children could not have been made more welcome. We made a big effort for them to be consideratre of other guests but there were toys for them, the chef was asked to come in early so they could have an early supper and a cot was provided. The garden was wonderful for them to play in, with a cannon facing over the sea from mock battlements in the garden.
The room was extremely comfortable and well-appointed. Lots of nice things in the bathroom, with lots of towels. Everything had been thought through from a comfort point of view. The only criticism of the room was that we don't like synthetic duvets and pillows (many people do because of allergies). Would have much preferred lovely white bed linen and proper blankets. Otherwise excellent.
The service was extremely attentive; nothing was too much trouble. There is a lot of personal attention from the owners, who work very hard to make one's stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible. Hired help were incredibly nice and helpful.
Food excellent - particularly bread and home-made marmalade. Wine list could have had a bit more breadth and depth. Excellent choice of whiskies.
Nice small drawing room for after supper, with a log fire.
Overall experience was of staying in a very well run, very traditional country house, with all creature comforts. An ideal place to unwind and get away from it all. We could not stay longer but would have loved to.
Highly recommended.
